You've got him again, twice in one thread, I'd be considering a serotonin injection mate. It's an absolute casserole, this thread. And you forgot about ForemanHook and the mighty combatsdeboxeo you silly banana. I miss the latter painfully wherever he is. Probably dead in a ditch tbf from trying to kerbstamp his own shadow, the poor angry *******. THAT makes me sad. Also, I only put up the second best version of Boulevard of Broken Dreams (The cover version by Greenday). The original is below. This content is protected
He relied on his power, and would exchange with heavy hitters. Most of the time he could hit more than them, but when he got to a true heavyweight level, he met his match. He was better p4p and could slip and slide, but he could still get hit on occasion. When the big boys hit, it stays with you.
There is no defense that can defend against everything i dont know why you assume I was Implying that, however Moores tactical decision wasnt sound against Rocky, That cross arm guard that close was not the MOST EFFECTIVE thing to do against Marciano when your in close. A better tactic for Marciano in close would have been grab and hold , get a punch or a few in and just hold til the ref breaks him and rocky . Rocky hitting shoulders and Archie taking hits just to get a counter shot in here and there was not the wisest tactic, Archie was really really good but some of his tactical decisions werent the best (that example) At least against Rocky he should have deployed a Jack Johnson, Gene Tunney, Johnny kilbane style (jab or jab cross tie up) repeat.
yes, his trading with more powerful punchers was a flaw of his , against rocky he should have just fought a more conservative strategy. I would envision against Joe Louis he would be knocked out pretty quickly or at least faster than against Tunney or Loughran ,cuz he took shots looking for his counter shot and although he is damn near top of the list in knockouts he doesnt have 1 punch Ko power , to do that with heavier hitters.
Harry Matthews tried that it didn’t work out for him. But I agree probably the best tactic just have to be willing to eat one here and there. Something Harry didn’t want to do. Idk the cross arm was working for him for a few rounds Marciano had a smart corner though and made him make adjustments mid fight. Adjustments being keep him on defense don’t stop throwing punches.
if it were one of those early 6 round fights like in the 1900s then archies strategy would have worked but the thing is taking all those shots on his arms make it harder for him to lift the arms up and use the forearms to block later in the fight and that cross arm guard wasnt helping in close ,archie has to do a lot to go from block a lead hook(lifting the rear arm and blocking with forearm) to a right hook(turning his body to right to roll the rear hook) rocky was also standing at an angle (off to archies left ) that would make rockys punches beat archies body movements , Say what you want about a style like jack johnsons he could get his hands on rockys biceps and stop all of that punching on the inside .
This content is protected I beg to differ. His power was legit. He thought he would be in trouble with Louis too that’s why he avoided him in the forties in that we agree. He also didn’t look to trade with Rocky. A lot of people always ask why didn’t he just tie him up. Great fighters tried thAt and didn’t work out. Heck Moore even tried it in the early going but he was to strong. Many fighters have testified to his unusual strength...not necessarily punching power just that Rocky was strong. But I’m getting off topic. Moore’s one punch power was there he laid out a lot of fighters.
Archie was a sharp hitter for sure, but that video is an exception not the rule, just like watching the video of Freddie welsh koing an opponent is an exception not the rule. He was not trading as in brawling , but weaving 4 shots and one or two punches slipping through only for you to land 1 punch that didnt hurt rocky was not optimal. Ezzard was able to early in the first fight punch and tie rocky. The difference was ezzard would lead then tie up a lot more effective to tie him up than Archie bobbing and weaving and tying up defensively.
True but was more disagreeing with the one punch power for Archie. Charles did a great job making Rocky off balance.
I can't really say Moore had a weakness, he didn't do some things as great as others but it's hardly a weakness. His chin has been mentioned and he was dropped over 50 times in his career which I found stunning. But, many times when he got nailed he went down rather than get nailed again and took a breather, and he won many of those fights. Hence his nickname,,," the Old Mongoose"
im not sure what happened later on in the fight but the minute ezzard adopted a catch and counter strategy it was downhill from there(block the lead hook land the lead etc) should have jabbed and tied up ..its boring sure but he could have won that way, some guys you gotta know you cant knock out or its too risky to try.
