Another one from my childhood gone. A very brave and game fighter who wasn’t afraid to take anyone on. Even late in his career he travelled to the States twice to take on the young and up and coming Jerry Quarry. A bit of a fiery character you get the impression he was one of those who would have been a better fighter in the street, yet all who knew him say what a nice man he was out of the ring. Apparently he was a fitness fanatic still jogging along the Golden Mile up until a few years ago. He mightn’t have been the best but growing up he just seemed to be a constant, and was one of those great characters that makes the fight game what it is. R.I.P.
A popular, brave warrior, who gave his fans full value. When he retired he ran nightclubs in Blackpool (probably the UK's most famous seaside resort). On one such occasion at his most famous club (007), he inadvertently helped the local football (soccer) team upset the much bigger West Ham (of London). Due to play Blackpool in the cup, when West Ham got there the day before, it seemed the game would be called off due to snow. So West Ham and England captain Bobby Moore and a few teammates decided not to waste the trip and visit his mate London at his club. A night of drinking ensued. The next morning Moore et al awoke to find there had been a thaw overnight, the game was on and they were duly walloped 4-0 in a big upset!
