I'm gutted for my man Jake LaMotta too.

I know he wasn't necessarily the most complete fighter on the list, but he was such a head case, and against some of the other brawler types I'd love to see how he would have fared.

Just imagine Nigel Benn vs Jake LaMotta.

    It ain't going 12 rounds.

So far it looks like our final would be Marvellous Marvin Hagler vs Roy Jones Jnr.

That's a tough one to call.

No Monzon on list? I gotta vote for Hagler.

Didn't Monzon have a ridiculous record of 80 fights or something?

I must admit, I don't know too much about him other than that particular stat.

    Was he legit?

I'd be interested to know what everyone thinks would be the most exciting, interesting, fascinating match up would be from among that 8.

If it was somehow possible to make it happen, which is the one?

A lot of people are supporting Hagler, and I've seen GGG v Hagler mentioned a lot.

Jones vs Eubank snr should have actually happened, but Chris has said long after retirement (perhaps jokingly) that at the time he wanted no part of Roy.

I actually think Benn v Canelo, if there were no weight shenanigans, would be a great one.

There's also some of the guys I left out, like Sugar Ray, and Monzon, who has been mentioned a few times.

What about the talent that was McLellan before the tragic Benn fight?

    Ditto Watson.

Steve Collins was mentioned by someone else to me, and he did beat Eubank and Benn, twice, and I have them on the list...but, styles make fights and all, so does he have the pedigree to make a list like this?

These are the guys from my childhood as I really got into the sport - so I am somewhat biased.

Imagine these fights happening back to back over several months with all the build up and the crazy atmosphere with every single fighter there to win.

Then... we'd have to wait 6 years for everyone to get old for Canelo to then fight one of them

Steve Collins was of course teak tough but a little too slow and straight and gets outclassed in this company.

Benn anyone is a good fight, but against Toney or Canelo would be a good style match up. Could his work rate and pressure pay off or would he walk straight into a trap, I think the latter.

Eubank RJJ would look one sided for a lot of it but if RJJ took the **** too much he could get egg on his face. Eubank very strong, great chin and great balance.

Hagler GGG of course, might as well have it in a 6ft ring.

    Hahaha...it would be good though.

You could have a random draw to see who fights who and then like you say have it take place over 6-9 months and eventually crown a middleweight legend.

The best we will get is some kind of virtual competition on a computer game.

    Great match ups.

Like you say, Eubank was very strong and I think on his day a real elite operator.

He was so brave, could take massive shots, had knock out power, could box, had endurance, and he was also a real character outside the ring.

Combined, they make him fantastic value.

Monzon is generally regarded as better than Hagler though you could make a case for either. He fights a bit like a middleweight Wlad Klitschko in some ways, keeping his distance and absolutely malleting guys with his nasty jab. THAT would have been one of the all time great MW fights but they missed each other by a few years .
