He would be considered the greatest ever pound for pound and ESPN Classic would show his fights every night. There would be six hour specials on TV and every US boxing writer would sing his praises.
Possibly being based in the U.S. and dealing with its media might have hurt him. Wife beating and heaving a woman off a balcony is not the best P.R.
The murder was decades after his career tho and there have been numerous wife beating boxers in the U.S., including Tyson with his **** and all. Maybe his bar fights and woman beatings may have been dealt with more harshly if he lived in the States may have cut short his career freedom wise? An intersting thought.
IF he was American, he would be more of a star in America but Monzon was a big star in Argentina.and South American
If american this guy would be undisputedly the number one middle of all time, and ranked easily in the top ten of all time p4p..... As it is,he is the best 160 man anyhow and one of the all timers p4p ....
John McCain has advocated the establishment of a Federal Boxing Commission during the course of his political career, and very well may attempt to impose one if elected POTUS. Carlos Monzon is one of the very finest arguments against that idea, by virtue of having boxed only once within the jurisdiction of McCain's proposed agency. Monzon's title defenses were broadcast live in the United States, and his finale with Valdes was featured on the cover of the August 8, 1977 issue of Sports Illustrated. When it came to recognition in the English speaking world, he was no rumor like Locche, but very much a mainstream sports star. In fact, while champion, Carlos Monzon was more famous in 1970s America than any active boxer is today, English speaking or not.
I made this exact same thread about a year ago on here. I maintain if Carlos was American (if's and but's I know) he would be a shoe in for the top ten in history in the majorities lists. He beat a lot of guys that are considered all timers, and guys high up on a 100 list as well. Anyone who has him any lower than #15 I disregard. As enquirer says though, as it stands he is still the best middleweight of all time and a high P4P ATG.
There is something truly unique about Monzon and his exiting the boxing stage while on top, and going out a winner. He was never humbled in the ring, and that's unlike Ali being pummeled by Holmes, Duran nearly being beheaded by Hearns, humiliated by Leonard (no mas), Leonard having his ass handed to him by Norris and then by Camacho, ...just insert a name of a great of the past and his humbling fall from grace inevitably. But Monzon was never humbled, and next to Marciano, and perhaps Tunney, Sal Sanchez and maybe just a handfull of others, that's very unique and impressive. I think he would be considered a towering giant in the sports world, up there with Ali, and Robinson if he were American.
I've seen the Briscoe film (not the one filmed at ringside), & it is CLEAR that Monzon was nowhere near being knocked out. He was surely rocked, but in a matter of seconds, he had recovered and just went about like nothing happened. I had gotten the notion as well that he Briscoe almost had him, but watching available film has changed my perception on what really occurred. Also watching the Valdez knockdown, it's evident that Monzon's recovery skills were quite remarkable. Puts some written accounts in a different perspective.
I think Monzon may of struggled if he were from the USA. I do not see an American promoter taking a risk with a prospect who is 21-3-5. I can see an American Monzon really having to battle even more for respect. Probably having to wait even longer for a title shot as people inside boxing will know how good he is, and want to make sure their prospect does not fight him.
Monzon is very frustrating to me as I can see so little of him on tape and what I see is often of poor quality. In addition, there is so little written about him to find on the web, especially in English, the man has become half myth ... I know he was a great middle, without question. The question is how great. He was extremely strong, had great stamina, KO power with the right, a strong jab, great size and an incredible chin. However, there were a few rounds where the much smaller Napolez was able to tag him a bit and he did not look great in either Grifith bout against an old Emile. I just don't know if he was top ten or top five ... if he were an American there would be a lot more film and we would know much more about his actuall ring career other than the record book.
