How high do you rank Hearn's win over Virgil Hill. I've never been more entertained by watching two guys just fight each other with a jab. Even though Hearns was moving up he did more damage and hurt Hill more. Great performance by Tommy. Probably would put it in his top 5 wins.
I rate it a lot higher than most people seem to. It feels like it’s almost been forgotten. Virgil Hill was an undefeated champion in his prime who now sits in the hall of fame.
Absolutely a great win, I agree with Magoo . Hearn's was 5+ years older and the shopworn fighter with 53 fights, it was fight #31 for Hill .. People way to hard on Tommy giving him a hard time for losing to the likes of Barkley and what not at his 4th best weight , LMAO .. They dont know **** from shinola ,, these bozos dont realize that Hearns was an incredibly active fighter and already had almost double the fights as these guys did ... Hearns did everything the right way , active and competition all the way up ... Going up and down in weight so he could fight, which did not do him any good.. hard on the body !!! ...His got a top 5 resume in the last 40 years of the sport ,,, for those of you who are new to the sport ... He put in the work and would knock Maywether's ****ing head off .. again for all you who are new to the sport !!!
It was a good win over a capable light heavyweight made even greater as he came from the welterweight division but I don't rate Hill very high as a Champion due to his record. After wining the Lt. heavy crown against Leslie Stewart he had 10 defenses before he lost to Hearns and so help me his best win may have been Bobby Czyz. He also beat James Kinchen. He regained the title beating Frank Tate. Ended up dropping 6 of his last 10. Split with Henry Maske winning a SD and dropping a UD. Did beat Lotte Mwale ,I don't think he ever beat an A fighter I mean, what was his best win?
Fantastic win. Hill was a tremendous fighter and the legit lightheavyweight champ of his day. A lot of fighters move up and take titles from alphabet title holders but Hearns always beat the top dudes in every weightclass with the exception of Hagler of course.
Pretty darn highly! How many welterweight champions, beat a light heavyweight champion? Barbados Joe Walcott, Mickey Walker, does the list get much longer?
Tremendous win. I was so impressed with Tommy that night. Hill had his flaws, but he had an excellent jab, had great legs and was a seasoned champion. A hard guy to beat. Hearns as we know, was considered close to shot. I thought Hearns was going to get beat up, to be honest. But then Tommy polished off his legendary boxing ability and uncorked his often unused left hook, and he beat Hill convincingly. I was actually quite impressed with Hill's durability, because Tommy caught him with some big shots. I remember the boxing headline on the cover of Boxing Illustrated: "Hearns climbs another hill." Loved that.
I agree with some of that. Hill didn't face the stiffest opposition, but then again he was considered the best 175er out there. I can't recall offhand where the fight was held (Vegas?) but Hill usually fought out if his hometown of Bismarck, which made him even tougher to beat since he had huge support there.
Considering that it was 28 pounds above Tommy's 1st championship weight, and that Hill was an established lightheavy-I personally believe Hill was overrated- it was a great win for Tommy.
It was a very good win for Hearns. Hill had a record that doesn't quite hold up to scrutiny, but he was still a good light-heavyweight, and a lot younger and naturally heavier than Hearns.
