Heard this said in passing and this match up honestly fascinates me.

Sure size is one thing, but Toney is such a strong and powerful counter-puncher.

    Interested what yall think.

    Man what a great matchup.
While Toney has the granite chin and superior skills, I actually think Wilder is the more mobile of the two. And as was apparently set forth in a separate thread, reach and power trump all other skills

If Toney's in shape he can potentially take a decision. We will have to wait and see how wilder looks vs Fury. If he can beat him I might lean toward wilder.

Yeah, Toney breaks him down. Wilder just can't box. Toney would pressure him and work the body. Wilder has the punche's chance with the right but Toney should be too slick for that.

Toney does not have the footwork or footspeed to get himself to the ideal position to punch up at Wilder. And going to the scorecards will not see a Haymon moneymaker lose. Dreary bout with lots of feints and taunting and very few meaningful punches landed.

I mean, it’s really weird to say this but “Burger King” Toney is the best guy he would be stepping in the ring with. besides Fury of course.

I really think Wilder could lose this, If Toney keeps working leaving him hitting thin air and takes his right hand out of the equation he could leave Deontay gasping for air pretty early. Denotay really is a lazy fighter he doesn’t do a whole lot in there unless the point is pushed and that could spell disaster against an “on” mildly obese master counterpuncher who loves a phone booth fight and is someone he isn’t poleaxing unless the stars align.

I think Toney busts him up. Wilder doesn't have the footwork to keep it at range and Toney is going to counterpunch him all night.

It is a silly comparison. Tommy Hearns was a superb boxer, he outboxed Benitez, Leonard and Virgil Hill. Deontay Wilder never really learnt how to box. I know he is trying to learn the fundamentals now but too little too late IMO.

Toney fought fat, slow heavy's. He could see punches coming roll and slip and counter ala the Sam Peter fights and he didn't need to use his legs.
Wilder is a bit different, he's Wild which can make him hard to time but he has a massive reach and Wilder's speed of getting his right hand to target could see him doing the unthinkable and taking Tony out

I mean in terms of cardio. Toney has had some fights where he is very lethargic and had a low punch output. That would get him killed against Wilder.

Expecting him to look like a men's magazine model is obviously out of the question at heavyweight for Toney.

This. In terms of size, conditioning and athleticism I cannot fault Wilder. I often think that with his physical frame he could have been a HW Tommy Hearns. Unfortunately he was not blessed with Hearns' boxing brain, and only an irrational belief in his right hand. It is what it is.
