Sandy Saddler vs. Willie Pep IV: One of the Dirtiest of All Time?

1. Pep winning due to superior speed of hand. He also turned Saddler quite a bit. Pep.
2. Pep's speed remained the edge. Pep headbutted, while Saddler held and struck Pep, producing the late-round KD by via right uppercut. Saddler.
3. Pep.
4. Saddler still hasn't been able to beat Pep to the punch. Saddler landed a low blow, thus decreasing his chances of winning he round he was already certain to lose. Pep.
5. The two got tangled up at the end of the round. Pep.
6. The fight was beginning to develop into a brawl as both were getting too tired to play games at this point. The two fell down together at the bell.
7. Saddler pushes the ref out of the way; Pep tries to trip Saddler unsuccessfully. While Saddler had Pep in a headlock, Pep tossed the ref to the canvas.
8. Pep threw Saddler to the canvas, and later shoved him into the ref.
9. Saddler hits Pep on the back of the neck real hard once or twice.

I know I scored for this, mostly for the heck of it, since it is just highlights and you can't judge off those. But it looked to me like Pep, despite being decked in round 2, was winning up until round 6. I stopped judging from 6 on cuz of all the dirty tactics, I had no clue how to factor in deductions and didn't even give it a try. How would you guys go about scoring 6-9?

Verdict: Being a very dirty fight for the last 4 rounds, it was very entertaining to watch.

As for the fight, Pep seems to be having the better of it with his classic style until the shoulder injury. The film shows Saddler hooking Pep's arm.

What stands out is that relatively young men had so much experience back then. Well more than 100 professional fights.

One of my all-time favorite eras of boxing the 50s. Basically each division got quite a bit of exposure rather than just the HWs, and great fighters and great fights were rampant.

I suppose a disappointing fight because of the ending, but a must watch because of the two greats. Thanks for posting.[/QUOTE]
