Depends on the context. I think a lot of serious fans underrate him.

Mike is still massive with casual fans or just the public at large, that reputation will always cause the "purists" to want to downplay things as a reaction to that.

I think Tyson is so overrated by casuals, that he's become underrated by more hardcore boxing fans.

Most of the regular posters here have him in the lower top 10, i think. Do you think that's too low?

As soon as the word "Tokyo", "Buster" or "Douglas" comes up, any rational debate is gone.

Depends on the context, as Bit says. I find him to get a little underrated on these boards. He has a very good resume despite what's often said, and he's incredible head-to-head. I think there's a real case for him to be top three in that department, and someone who's made my top ten 'greatness' list for some time.

Definitely top 10 heavy. As has been implied, because a lot of casual fans rate even a post prime Tyson as being like a combo of Godzilla and King Kong - serious fans will downgrade him in reaction to that.

How overrated he is by casuals and his fanboys supersedes how underrated he CAN be by some hardcore fans, who know more about the sport and sell his resume short. He’s a legit contender for most overrated athlete ever but that’s the casuals. To them boxing is Ali, Tyson, and now Mayweather and Pacquaio. Ali is a legit contender for best ever at heavy, an arguable top 10 p4p, Mayweather & Pacquaio are top 50 p4p, Tyson is arguably not a top 10 at heavy, and certainly not a top 100 all-time pound for pound.

Tyson may never be accurately rated. He's too polarizing. The very mention of his name begs extremes, and arguments in that vein are going to be flawed in either direction simply by virtue of being taken too far.
