You know from basically 1979 to 1989 only two people beat him - MCcallum and Kalambay. Two superb boxers who one is a HOF boxer and the other can is close. AND one of the losses was a SPLIT DECISION. I don't see how that makes someone overrated.
I think there are small gaps when maybe he could have won a title but had he come along earlier I don’t think he’s taking Hagler and then you get into Nunn and Toney and RJJ and Eubanks/Benn/Watson and there’s no bargains to be found there either. Remember, his career basically ended in 1992 (although he fought a few times after) so you’re really trying to find some very narrow slots where he could have fit into winning a title.
Graham was talented, super elusive and could make a lot of quality fighters look like novices. Pretty sure he sparred Eubank and he said afterwards there was no way he would fight him and I have certainly read him quoted he didn't want any part of Graham, too slick for him and would be punching air trying to land.
For elder britons who were fans, there's a lot of painful memories. Then just a few years back there were reports he'd had a complete mental breakdown. Hope he's finally doing better.
There was always Champions Graham would have beat and there was always Champions who would have beat Graham. He had a very long unbeaten record and was a long ignored contender...but the bottom line is, there were always Champions that would have beaten him. It’s not like he was ever head and shoulders ahead of any pack. Just like Eubank, Doug Dewitt, Benn, Steve Collins, Galvano, Frank Tate, Reggie Johnson, Sambu Kalambay were never regarded individually as ever being quite the best in the world either.
Don't agree with that, although i give Benn a fair punchers chance but he absolutly toys with Eubank and Watson 9 times out of 10 IMO.
It’s not so much who he beat. It was who he was as good as. Graham was as good as all the B list guys that wound up with alphabet straps not called Hagler, Hearns, Nunn, Toney or Jones.
