This thread could equally have been titled 'I hate Sugar Ray Leonard'.

Truth is, he played a game that few fighters have ever had the opportunity to play and benefitted personally from it. And a lot of people don't like him because of that.

But In a sport where few fighters come out with their faculties intact (never mind any money), Leonard is an all-too rare success story.

Did he make enemies along the way? No doubt. But if there was one successful fighter for every ten successful promoters, the retirement years for boxers would look a lot better. When a fighter comes out at the end looking and sounding like him, it is a small but significant victory in this sport where the boxers are historically at the bottom of the rung in boxing's hierarchy.

I reckon both Ray and Donny from the night they fought would beat Stipe Drviš senseless - and I don't just mean the useless version that lost to (and many believe went into the proverbial tank for) Danny Green.

Lalonde defeated Leslie Stewart, who defeated Marvin Johnson, who defeated Mate Parlov, who defeated John Conteh. Therefore, Conteh is the worst light heavyweight champion.

He'd beat plenty of guys at 175. I'm not even sure Donny would beat him even without the weight restrictions.

It was a scam that title .. SRL already had boxing in his back pocket by that time ,,,, he told the sport of Boxing to jump , and they replied how high ?.... He was the draw and boxing is making money ... He wanted the titles but didnt want to put in the work. Not too confusing here

True, John its the act of actually doing that is where its at. LaLonde would of had 7 more lbs in that right that deposited Ray. Maybqe absorbed Leonard's punches. Donny was a marketable but flawed fighter.
People come down on Floyd for picking and. choosing or a catchweight. Mayweather never needed this type of stuff. Imagine today if Floyd's team somehow changed the rules so he could 'claim' Bernard Hopkins title. While Bernard was on the crapper.

Why do you think it was a scam? Surely many other champions won titles in divisions they never fought in. That 's the genius of it

Sure it was genius of him ... Like I said, wanted the titles didnt want to put in the work ,,, His way or the highway with the CW and weakening Lalonde for 2 titles, not a fan of it , thats all ..

Fair enough. I would have to rate Manny Pacquiao as the worst Jr middle champ of all times by the same token
