Well we are back for the 20th installment of Fight of the week, where we review, rescore and remember some historic fights of the past. This week the FOTW time machine takes us back 31 years ago to July 8, 1990 at Hilton Hotel, Las Vegas Nevada.

Paez and Dorsey return for a rematch of their previous fight a mere 5 months earlier. Paez would win a controversial decision over Dorsey making his 6th defense of the IBF Featherweight title. Paez would go on to add the WBO Featherweight title by beating Louie Espinoza in between these 2 fights. They square off in this weeks rematch to settle the score…only to have another controversial decision. Who won? You decide.

so buckle up and settle down for Paez vs Dorsey II

I scored it 9-1-2 for Dorsey, giving him all of the rounds except round 11 which I gave to Paez and I scored 7 and 10 EVEN. Dorsey was busy, he is the definition of an arm puncher, but he threw a lot of arm punches. He also used angles when in the center of the ring, but he didn't have to do that much because Paez was content to lay on the ropes. Paez threw some flashy flurries, (other than those rare times, he was a heavy bag) but when he did Dorsey would answer them with a longer flurry of his own, though not as "flashy." The fight must have looked completely different from ringside to the judges, but I could only score from video and it looked one sided IMO. Dorsey did get cuts and bruises on his face - maybe from head butts on the inside?

And...Pacheco was a commentator, it's hard for any fight to overcome that handicap.

Jorge Paez v Troy Dorsey II

Let me just say this was a toughie. The workrate of Dorsey or the harder, accuracy of Paez.

    Round 1: 10-9 Dorsey
    Round 2: 10-9 Dorsey
    Round 3: 10-9 Dorsey
    Round 4: 10-9 Paez
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Dorsey
    Round 7: 10-9 Paez
    Round 8: 10-9 Dorsey
    Round 9: 10-9 Paez
    Round 10: 10-9 Paez
    Round 11: 10-9 Paez
    Round 12: 10-10 Even

Total: 115-115 Draw (actual scores: 116-112 Dorsey, 115-113 Paez and 114-114 Even for a Draw)

I'm sure if I score this again I would be looking at a different card. It was that tight. The entire fight fought inside a narrow pocket. Needless to say, I had no problem with the decision.

Actually Troy told me the reason he got cut eyes so bad was because the bone over his brow was sharp & when hit were really cut from the inside out
He had surgery to round out the bone edges. He said it worked

I wish these two had fought a dozen times.

It would probably end up 4-4-4, haha, and the rounds with add up to an exactly even score … except that if you looked closely at the scorecards over all those rounds you’d have very few that every judge agreed upon.

And I’d watch every single one of those rounds with a grin on my face.

Some guys were just made to fight each other. This isn’t Ali-Frazier level stuff, or even Ali-Norton or Gatti-Ward, but my goodness their styles were just made for an entertaining fight.

Great choice @PhillyPhan69 — going to carve out time to watch this!

I have always enjoyed both of these fighters, Lopez vs Paez was one on my favorite fights in my younger days.

This was pretty good but didn’t quite capture my attention like I hoped it would. But still a pretty decent fight. I did think there were a number of rounds that could be scored a variety of ways

    1 Paez
    2 Dorsey
    3 Dorsey
    4 Dorsey
    5 Paez
    6 Dorsey
    7 Paez
    8 Dorsey
    9 Paez
    10 Dorsey
    11 Paez
    12 Paez

    114-114 Draw on my card
