Holmes-Coetzee was massively discussed after Coetzee stopped Dokes. Sanchez-Arguello at lightweight, but Arguello was moving up to 140, so not sure how that would have happened. Also Pryor-Mancini was talked about a lot.
I recall an unbeaten Don Curry telling John Mugabi he’ll fight him and knock him out (if he dethrones Hagler)
I would have liked to see a few unification's at various and tightened up the titles. There's some nice matches in that lot and the odd mouth watering one. Some titles at 175 turned quick and ended up in other unifications but some champs co-incided for ages. Mostly early 80's stuff - Holmes - Weaver II Holmes - Thomas Mustafa - Saad Spinks - Saad Rosario - Mancini Sanchez - Pedroza Chandler - Pintor Some good fights in those even if all aren't mouthwatering as such. Setting unification's aside - Leonard - Pryor (Talked up) Leonard - Hearns II at 154 Hearns - McCallum/Mugabi Duran - McCallum Pryor - Mancini (Talked up) Gomez - Chandler Benitez - Hagler (Talked about a lot when Benitez hit his straps at 154) Mancini - Davis (Talked a bit) Arguello - Sanchez (A Sanchez goal) @Saad54 - Right in your sweetspot mate.
According to Mancini everyone in boxing wanted to fight him.....Holmes - Coetzee was discussed at length. I know world politics were involved but is there any other reason? Call me naïve but I don't understand why Holmes would not want to crush Coetzee . It would be a PR meltdown for apartheid. SRL vs. Pryor would have been great to watch
And at the time they did. Mancini and his oft told story was where the money was in the lighter divisions. They all wanted a piece of him.
Just scratching my head thinking of what big time fighters at those weights he could beat..... OK starting a new thread
Well among those chasing were Pryor, Davis, Boza, Camacho and every lesser fighter anywhere near the division. Chacon jumped up to fight him.
