A fight between Moorer and Jeff Harding around 1989-1990 would have been fun. I would heavily favor Moorer to score a stoppage but Jeff was game. He had heart, chin and power. Would have been exciting for about 6-7 rounds
I'm specifically talking about H2H, not greatness. There aren't 20 out there that beat him, not in a million years. But since you think they are, do tell them.
In no order: Jones Ward Qawi Charles Harold Johnson Dariusz Tarver Spinks Mustafa Greb Tunney Bivol Beterbiev Dawson Calzaghe Kovalev Moore Maxim Conn Saad Maske Hill Loughran John Henry Lewis Adonis Stevenson Gibbons Conteh Guillermo Jones Floyd Patterson Adamek Hopkins Foster I'm not saying he'd lose to all of them, but he's no sure thing for top 20 head to head at 175.
Bernard Hopkins Antonio Tarver Eddie Mustafa Virgil Hill Dwight Qawi Joey Maxim Roy Jones Jr. Victor Galindez Lloyd Marshall Billy Conn Saad Muhammad Maxie Rosenbloom Bob Foster Harold Johnson John Henry Lewis Jimmy Bivins Michael Spinks Archie Moore Ezzard Charles Gene Tunney Tommy Loughran Tommy Gibbons Jack Delaney Sam Langford Jimmy Slattery Harry Greb There's probably a few other who might be able to as well. That's 19 guys from the 30s onwards (no way they're "too ancient") and another seven from before the 30s.
Moorer has become more overrated in recent years because the prism by which some fans view him through has become diluted by the recent ascension of the WBO. More people label him a "world champion" who had x amount of "credible" defenses, even though the WBO was seen as little more than a high-level Euro belt during his day. Moorer himself stated that the belt '******ed' his career. I do think Moorer looked really good at the weight, however, and that he would have been a tough head-to-head matchup for many, but when you cut through the unnecessary glitz, he was a solid top-10 guy who fought very few men of note there. In terms of skill at 175, I rate him highly; in terms of greatness, he is not even on the radar.
George Crowcroft I've highlighted the ones that can beat him in This content is protected (but it's not a guarantee they will). The rest cannot IMO. NoNeck Just like I did with George Crowcroft's list, I'm gonna do to yours. I've This content is protected the ones that I think can beat Moorer (though it can go either way). The rest cannot. My sentiments exactly. He was Gerald If he never met Benn to me. An untested destroyer in the wrong weight class a ticking time bomb In order to make weight.
I doubt a fair few of those guys are taking on MM- I think he beats most of them senseless unless they’re armed with a Wendy’s milkshake.
Christ...I bet even Manny Steward wouldn't say that. To illustrate how packed 175lb's is, in one roughly twenty year period (30's to 50's) you've got Billy Conn, Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles and John Henry Lewis.....each with an arguable claim as being the best LHW in history...and each of which being put forward as being that by some of boxing's best fighters / trainers. So, we are only twenty years in of 120-130 years of history and we are already down to six spots available....do you seriously think Moorer is going to make the Top 10 cut? It'd be a cursed abomination of a list if he did.
This is ridiculous. There's legions of all-time greats you've given NO chance at beating Michael Moorer?? Why on earth does Bernard Hopkins have a better chance at beating Moorer than Harold Johnson or Victor Galindez? Same again, why does Tarver stand a better chance than Eddie Mustafa Muhammed?
You don't have to be "dangerous" to win a fight though. Moorer was vulnerable with weak opponents at LHW. Saad and Yaqui get the edge due to fighting better opponents.
