Alberto Puello Calderón vs. Jesús Antonio Rubio & Erick Yomer Rosa Pacheco vs. Ricardo Astuvilca RBR

Round 1

Puello is dipping to his right and coming up flurrying with right hooks and sweeping underhanded lefts. Rubio covering up and sidestepping, occasionally showing a check left jab or trying downstairs witih a probing right. Puello initiates some patty-cake with the opposite-stance jabs, and looks to snap Rubio's head back with a rapid left cross shooting from an unseen launchpad off the far-side hip. Tactical stuff here, feeling out round but with a palpably electrified feel, like something dramatic is a punch away. It was! Rubio down from a quick right hook literally halfway between the warning clap at ten seconds and the bell.

10-8 Puello

 

Anybody else see a little Celestino "Pelenchín" Caballero in Puello?

Cosmetically in both face and body yes, but also stylistically. Quick loose and wiry-strong with slapping but effective arm punches.

 

Rubio started the second bringing the heat and plugging rights into the midsection but he was soon put in line with the busier and flashier hands of the Dominican putting a damper on his aggression.

20-17 Puello

 

Puello using the jab as strictly a measuring tool, not snapping it whatsoever, saving all his mustard for big pendulous left uppercut leads on the body and sweeping right hooks up top. Rubio can't get close without either getting whacked upside the head by Puello's fists, or, worse (if not quite legally), getting thunked on his temples with Puello's inner elbows.

Puello is most impressive, to me, when taking his time, sitting back and letting the opponent come to him, showing off his slick defensive moves and playing the slip-and-counter game. When he is on the hunt it works (at least against Rubio here) but looks way too messy for my tastes.

40-35 Puello

 

There was no way he wasn't getting saddled with that nickname (Chino) growing up in Sinaloa.

Anybody with even remotely Asiatic features gets that, even if their DNA consists entirely of indigenous and/or Spanish conquistador stock.

Or actually, sometimes they'll go with "El Indio"...but more often, they're just like "Nope, we're calling you essentially the Mexican iteration of Chinaman". They ain't woke south of the border.
