He blames Arum. Strangely Wright left Arum because Arum was over pricing Wright? :rofl http://www.vindy.com/news/2008/jul/16/why-not-a-wright-fight-for-kelly/
I wonder if Wright and Kermint Cintron will fight 154?:huh What Wright really should do is fight Rubio in a box off for right to fight Pavlik:bbb
The fact that there is an article like this is encouraging. Birmingham is 100% correct when he says Pavlik has nothing to gain by fighting Williams. The very best case scenario against Williams would be for Kelly to dominate him for a few rounds, and then take him out in under 7. If that happened, big deal, Pavlik beat up a welterweight. And that is as good as it could get. Anything less than domination followed be a mid rounds KO and people would rip Pavlik BAD. There is one other encouraging sign. Last Friday the Vindicator reported that Cameron Dunkin would talk to Kelly and his father about a Williams fight over the week end. The Vindicator also said they would report the details on Monday morning. Here it is wednesday morning, and there is an article about Wright, and nothing on Williams. I'm hoping that when Dunkin asked Kelly about williams, Kelly said atsch :nut atsch
Pavlik/Wright is the only fight at 160 that matters except for Pavlik/Abraham. Pavlik/Abraham is all but done for January. If a prime Winky was a natural 160, I might agree with you. However, we are not talking about anything close to a prime winky. We are talking about a 36 year old Wright fighting above his best weight. You can start to get a clue about how Pavlik/Wright would turn out by looking at their common opponents. Common opponents usually do not mean as much as one might think, but in this case we have two common opponents for a total of 7 fights and 63 rounds of boxing. Bronco McKart went 32 rounds with Winky. He lasted less than 6 rounds against Pavlik. Pavlik fought a ring worn McKart who was way past his best, but Father Time has not exactly left Winky unscathed, so the argument that McKart was old is a wash. Talyor held Winky to a draw. Pavlik sparked JT in under 7 rounds. In the rematch Taylor fought what was arguably the best fight of his career, and Pavlik still beat him by a UD. Now we go to styles. On the defensive front Winky is one of the best ever. However, Pavlik hurts guys buy hitting them on the gloves, arms, and shoulders. Winky has a very good jab, but Pavlik's defense is much better than people generally give him credit for. In addition, Winky's jab does not have the pop one would need to hold Pavlik at bay. Winky is not a back foot fighter, but against Pavlik, he either backs up, or goes home early; possibly real early. Let's look at physical attributes. Pavlik is over 6' 2" with a reported 75" of reach. Winky is 5' 10" with 72" of reach. Pavlik is basically a LHW who by some miracle of physiology manages to boil down to 160 for the weigh in. Winky is a blown up light middleweight. In order to "outbox" Pavlik a 36 year old Winky, fighting above his best weight, would have to win 7 rounds while fighting off the back foot, dealing with Pavlik's work rate, and avoiding Pavlik's right hand. Sorry Winky, but that ain't gonna happen. Pavlik KO10 Winky.
What are the chances Paul Williams has a good career at 154/60 and above? pretty good imo. Now, what are the chances Winky is going to do anything significant in the future? Not much. In retrospect, a Pavlik win over a physically prime Williams will do more for Pavlik, legacy-wise, than beating up an old, inactive, semi-retired fighter like Winky.
I actually think Winky could be a more difficult opponent than Arthur. With the singular exception of punching power, everything Arthur does, Winky does better. In my opinion watching Winky try to deal with Pav's work rate, strength, and punching power, while simultaneously watching Pavlik try to figure a way around Wright's defense would be HIGH DRAMA!
A few years ago Pavlik's camp tried to get a fight with Winky and Winky turned him down cuz Kelly was a nobody and the risk was too great. Winky was offer a couple million to fight Sturm last year and he turned that down. If he would go out fight some people (and win) instead of running his mouth, maybe people would respect him more and want to see him fight. IMO, Winky hasn't done anything in years to deserve title shots. But thats just my opinion.
The odd thing about the Sturm fight is that it would have GUARANTEED Winky a shot at Pavlik. At one point Arum even encouraged Winky to go fight sturm, and come back with something Kelly wants; the WBA belt.
I started watching the second fight again the other night when I was trying to decide which files to transfer to another drive. I've been downloading and watching fights lately and I'm amazed at the difference in those two in that fight and a lot of what I have seen recently. I don't see how either of those guys can get much flak after that fight. :-(
