Cool story. Driscoll is great to watch (on the snippets we have). His fight with Attell is near the top of my most wanted lost/not filmed fights.
Great stuff. Thanks for taking the time. Ochs'set on Hurley is fantastic, too, and highly recommended.
@roughdiamond You may find this of interest. I used to discuss boxing with marbleheadmaui on that site. There was a gentleman ThomasTabin also that was very knowledgeable. I think that some of those old conversations were preserved here by stickgrappler. The two I mentioned were soooo knowledgeable. BOXING: The Wisdom of Mike Gibbons. ~ Stickgrappler's Sojourn of Septillion Steps
Fantastic post (of which I only quoted a small portion). Minnesota produced so many good fighters for a while. I’m guessing Scott LeDoux missed class the day they taught the defense part, haha.
That book has the shoulder roll in it and it was published in 1940 incredibly some people still think the Mayweather's invented that lol!!
I used to collect boxing 'how to' books. The shoulder roll was in almost every collegiate book, back when colleges had boxing teams.
An equally important part of the St. Paul style is how you shift your feet as you bend at your waist when slipping a punch or pulling back. After your opponent misses, he or she is off balance so if you have shifted your feet (usually your lead foot) properly to leverage a counter, you may be in position to do some real damage. Your opponent is moving toward you at the same time you are moving toward him, and then WHAMO you unload with your counter. You have to work at these moves so you can react automatically.
