The third Quarter Final produces a really difficult stylistic gel, a possible stop-start grub a possible pressure/counter vs step/counter battle for the glide. Speed, defensive excellence, toughness and technical acumen for days across these fifteen rounds with another decision seeming almost certain.

    JAMES TONEY (77-10-3)
James Toney was coolness personified in his first round combat with Gus Lesnevich, letting the Englishman work as hard as he like while dipping and smothering his way to the devastating counters that would see him stop Lesnevich in the eighth. A more significant threat was posed by Kid Norfolk who managed to turn pressure into some significant body blows, but again, Toney slipped just enough and countered more than enough to beat Norfolk out of the fight.

    JOSE TORRES (41-3-1)
Jose Torres turned in one of the best performances of the first round in blasting out an overwhelmed Georges Carpentier in nine. Carpentier set some problems for Torres in the early going but a withering bodyattack paved the way for some devastating uppercuts that left the Frenchman in a state of slumber. In turn, Torres fought probably the dullest contest of the second round, out-jabbing and out-working Mauro Mina in a stop-start affair that left fans cold but Torres in possession of a quarter-final berth.

I don't see off Toneys record at ltheavy how he beats any worthwhile opponent. His lightheavy days he was lazy and lost. You're giving Toney credit due to the cruiserweight championship fight & his heavyweight fights that at lightheavy he did not show.

Toney`s fight v Williams was at super middle.

I reckon this is a weird fight to think about mentally....the mesh of these two styles is odd and I'm not sure these types of stylistic extremes have matched up before.

Torres has a few things going for him....big and very fit at the weight, great long jab that I wonder if Toney would find easy to counter (probably), awesomely quick combo's when in his rhythm...plus that classic peek-a-boo front foot lurch into his opponents to go forehead to forehead and rip combo's. I see Torres getting clobbered by some hard counters as he closes distance...maybe Torres' could bring his lead hook out? Dip, hook and lurch into Toney...maybe smother that one counter. Torres might have difficulty adjusting to Toney at first, but Torres just got so much more offence available.

My take atm - Torres UD 15...pulls away in the latter rounds.

NB. I have never bought into the theme that if a fighter showed little at a weight (eg. Toney at Lt. Hvy) then you have to limit him to / by what he showed. So I don't cap Toney's capacities o his performances at 175 anymore than I automatically assume ODLH couldn't fight at 140lb's. It just doesn't make sense to me....give Toney a motivating paycheck and he'd come in fit...ditto ODLH at 140lb's.

No matchmaker at the time ever assumed Toney was a bum or flop at LHW - they treated him with due caution...but then this goes to which way you evaluate fighters, whether a) retrospectively looking at their records and performances, or b) as if you were managing / matchmaking at what you could potentially be steering a charge into (my preference). Tangent over.

Stylistically Torres has nothing for Toney. I like James by TKO

Toney looked sluggish in his fight at light heavy.

I have Torres wining via his higher work rate and excellent combination punching. The most underrated aspect of Torres was his tremendous handspeed and Toney typically did not do well against fighters that had more speed than him. Toney was at his best against hard hitting bangers that he could counter punch to death. Torres was not that guy.
