Because they are essentially asking Plant to fight with a huge cut in his paycheck because of something happening to Canelo (whether it was Gingersnap's fault or not) or sit around with his thumb up his rear end waiting for Canelo. And while some might argue his career has been him mostly doing that anyway (and by "someone" I mean "me") it still smacks of 'not right' to essentially "punish" Plant because of something happening to Canelo, especially because if Plant loses the title in the interim he loses the payday. Now, the counter-argument would be, "Damn, sucks to be him. Guess he shouldn't have fought all those softies then; maybe he'd be a bigger name with more weight to throw around." That's why I say iffy and not shitty.

Well hang on; according to an ESPN interview with Caleb Plant, the stipulation was that Canelo got a replacement opponent at the same money, but Caleb Plant had to wait. As in, couldn't fight anyone else at all, had to put his career on hold. THAT'S more than a little shifty.

It's such garbage, and what's worse is you know people are STILL going to pull the A-side treatment. "You don't make anywhere near that much with a replacement" fine. Caleb probably doesn't make even half of his guarantee against Benevidez, his next most popular option. "You don't make anything at all AND you have to put your career and life on hold" is straight trash.
The reality is if Canelo got injured Plant would have to wait, if the other way around Canelo wouldnt have to. What it looks like to me is the standard Canelo way of wanting to get to around 5-6 weeks before the fight before formally announcing it. Just pure A side gamesmanship.

they have to wait. who else is plant going to fight that would make investors 10 million to pay plant, plus the replacement for canelo? yet canelo can replace plant with just about anyone, and the fight would still make enough to pay canelo, plus the 10 million to pay whoever is replacing plant. plant is nobody. he is a warm body they can trot out for canelo to make them money. nobody serious gives him a chance, if he loses the belt in his next fight, vs anybody, nobody would bat an eye. thats the reality. thats their individual bargaining positions.
