Was it a trip, a slip or a knockdown? Love to see some overt instances from you guys. Here are two that really drove me nuts to the point where I said, "How did he miss that?!" Pernell Whitaker v Wilfredo Rivera II - check out this perfect left that dropped Whitaker at 29:05 only for it to be called a slip. This content is protected Here is another one. James Page v Jose Luis Lopez - check out the 'knockdown' at 37:00. The most obvious slip I've ever seen. What harm, but he had slipped on the logo in the center ring already, which should have tipped the ref off to the fact that there was an issue. Page was none too pleased. This content is protected
There was a recent fight on I think DAZN in the last year where it was a legit knockout and the ref ruled it was caused by a charging shoulder I think. However replays clearly showed it was legit, the ref let the fight go after the KOd fighter was given time. That was pretty dangerous (the concussed fighter going on for another 3 rounds) and a bad stubborn call he refused to reverse
Rules, I should have mentioned to everyone, if they could leave behind a link to the moment they were talking about it would be really helpful to look at. I was trying to look for the moment of Weaver-Holmes where you mentioned the knockdown and couldn't find it without watching the whole fight. So if you and everyone else could reply with a link it would be great.
Not a knockdown, but when Mills Lane ruled that David Kamau cut Julio Cesar Chavez with a punch and not a headbutt. It affected the whole course of the fight. Afterwards, seeing the reply which showed a clash of heads, Mills admitted that he missed the call and apologized to Chavez. In what may have been a karmic evening of the score, Kamau went down from a punch to the collarbone and that point cost him the fight.
Here is round 7 of Danny Lopez v Mike Ayala. At 34:51 Lopez drops Ayala. Now over the years you get a feel for time with a knockdown and I thought something was funny about how long Ayala was down. So I rewound and rechecked and Ayala was actually down for 13 seconds. Another one of Carlos Padilla's mixups in this fight. This content is protected
Here is another one from Whitaker v Rivera II at 23:21. Rivera is credited with a knockdown when it clearly is a case of Whitaker tripping over Rivera's foot. This content is protected
Created this thread a few years ago to explore whether Roberto Duran was knocked down by light-hitting Lou Bizzarro (who Duran ultimately nearly killed, or so it seemed): https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/did-lou-bizzarro-knock-down-roberto-duran.587153/ It’s at almost exactly the 32 minute mark on this version: This content is protected I think it was a flash knockdown but it’s worthy of inspection.
Hmmmm that's a tough call, whether it was or not Duran was hit by a punch when he was going down and I think the ref should have given a count
Gianfranco Rosi vs. Donald Curry: Al Bernstein goes into hysterics when Octavio Meyran doesn't call this a knockdown. The referee does correctly notice the other five times that Curry sends Rosi to the canvas in this fight. Sumbu Kalambay vs. Francesco Dell'Aquila: Lorenzo Casentini interrupts a good exchange to give Kalambay a very dubious standing eight-count. With the fight taking place in Rosi's hometown, it might have been the local boy being gifted the benefit of the doubt. No matter, Kalambay stopped him in the ninth with a body shot.
Zab Judah dropped Floyd in the 2nd round but it was ruled a slip by Richard Steele This content is protected Gary Russell dropped Lomachenko but it was ruled a slip. This content is protected
Paige/Lopez I forgot about that fight. Anyway the call by Perez was typical Tony Perez. He basically doesn't everything wrong from the opening bell. Surprising he can find the arena. Probably the worst referee in boxing history. This is the only guy that could have found a way to ruin an Ali/Frazier fight.
