He should be the firm favourite but maybe they have shortened them even more because he seems to be in the better half of the draw. Looks like he is possibly on a collision course with Nyika in the semis..whom he beat quite clearly in the worlds.
So far all the oympians that have boxed this olympics have been poor, not much feinting and their punch mechanics are really bad.
In fairness, they have to be very busy in three round fights. I agree that some of them have looked terrible (especially the SHWs as a group), but others should be okay once they adjust their styles for the pros.
David Nyika fights today. If he wins, he becomes NZs first olympic boxing medalist since David Tua in 1992.
Looks like he's got another win or two in him. Brushed that bloke aside easy. The Russian #1 seed looks good but hardly unbeatable. Could be gold coming up for the Kiwis.
Future Pro? Mirzhakalilov will be a solid pro, very crowd pleasing style I thought he got robbed, Khataev looks great very subtle skills and pressure fighting style, extremely strong for the weight could potentially beat Whittaker, Whittaker should be a good pro but he doesn't have power and he seems chinny, Paolo Aokuso got arguably robbed dude has a lot of Johnny Famechon looking movements, southpaw using the shoulder roll and seems to have significant pop and infighting and can fight off of the ropes. Nurdauletov can be solid at 168-175 if he makes the adjustments he lacked against Khataev, his left and distance management is superb. Danier Pero , who's brother is a pro currently, would make an amazing heavyweight, his style looks to me how people think Fury fights from memory, great ringcraft and footwork dude upset Erislandy Savon he's a star in the making if he can take a punch. Richie Torres has actual boxing ability for a heavyweight(Sorry not sorry)and seems to have solid power fighting as a southpaw. I think there will be more smaller heavyweights making waves to debunk the mythos of the SHW.
