Prime for prime, could the Marvelous one, have stopped Jake Lamotta? Or is he settling for a points decision?
I think so. I think he could have outboxed him for 12,15 rounds or either KO / TKO him. In the Hearns fight you saw it...If Hagler is forced to, he can deliver and force a KO. Also trade with a dangerous puncher. He was an absolute powerhouse and also quite versatile.
No. Butt prime Jake may tear Marvins face up & stop him. Marvin WAS NOT a great puncher folks. Hearns, Mugabi, Leonard were not middleweights. What Marvin was was a great boxer/puncher who when his reflexes & timing left had to assume a punchers style vs small opponents.
I would ( on balance ) say no he wouldn't, SRR who P4P was a bigger/harder puncher than Hagler IMO failed to floor Jake, despite the fact that LaMotta had shed half his body weight to get on the limit, so don't think Marvin would have been able to replicate that result, but who knows. keep well.
I see your point, but i can't agree with it. Hagler was not a one punch knockout artist like Foreman or Shavers, or a fast starting KO Beast like Tyson...but for sure he knew how to stop his opponents. You can see it by his ko ratio. Plus you don't have to be a great puncher to knock someone out. See Ali - Foreman. And besides, the question the threat creator asked wasn't if Hagler would knock LaMotta out cold, but could he "stop" him. Louis: 75,36% Tyson: 75,86% Hearns:71,64% Liston: 72,22% ... Hagler 77.61% Btw: SRR had 54.23%. If you erase all 6 Lamotta Fights from his record its around ~56%. I know statistics doesn't tell you the whole story, but at least they tell you something. I know LaMotta had that granite chin but my guess is Hagler could TKO him via knock him down, mangle him out of the ring or due to cuts.
Stop Hagler? Funny. SRR was smaller than Lamotta. No knockout occured. Jake wasn't a great puncher himself hahaha
That’s exactly I see it. Hagler was never stopped on his career, and only controversially knocked down once, Lamotta was hardly put down himself but he could be stopped, there is no way he would be the man to stop Hagler. Hagler might not be a one punch knock out artist but he hit hard enough to stop a good standard of opponent. Hagler stoppage.
LaMotta's face would be hamburger in about 12 rounds with Hagler, around the 13th or 14th the ringside doctor will have seen enough. As for the notion that Jake could stop Marvin? only with a claw hammer in the street. LaMotta didn't carry enough power to even bother Hagler
Marvelous Marvin Hagler vs Jake La Motta would look more like his title bout against Roberto Hands Of Stone Duran on Nov 10 1983. La Motta was a very tough customer who would have given Hagler a very tough time. La Motta could not be intimidated. It would go to the judges cards, like the Duran fight. Hagler would take it, but the fans would not be happy, it would be close. Hagler would know that he was in a fight. Remember the first Vito Antuofermo bout on Nov 30 1979, Marvelous tried to brawl, we all saw the the way the judges scored it.
No reason to believe anyone ever at MW stops Jake in his prime at least not without a freak incident.
