Tournament favourite John Conteh is matched with Jose Torres, something of a surprise package perhaps. Who will pick up the first final berth?

    JOHN CONTEH:
    UD15 Zsolt Erdei
    UD15 Joey Maxim
    UD15 Maxie Rosenbloom

    JOSE TORRES:
    KO9 Georges Carpantier
    UD15 Maura Mina
    UD15 James Toney

Both loved and admired in Classic, but who takes the W?

I'm pretty torn on this one. My head is saying Conteh but my heart is for Torres. Conteh was a good sized light heavy that could jab people silly with his primary weapon. On the other side you have Torres who with his peekaboo style was a master at slipping the jab and throwing fast combinations. Conteh is the naturally bigger man as he was a full fledged light heavy that also fought at heavyweight while Torres started out and had the majority of his fights at 160.

Bottom line, the smart money is probably with Conteh but I have a feeling that stylistically Torres gives him a very difficult fight. I'm hesitantly taking Conteh by UD.

I'm confident Conteh outboxes Torres for a UD

Excellent video! Torres is such a fun fighter to watch and is somewhat under appreciated. It doesn't look good for him moving on to the next round of this tournament but the guy was an exceptional fighter as this video clearly shows.

Yeah, it's a glory of a two minutes that, I love it, some lovely lashing body shots in there.

Imagine if Bob Foster would have decided to honor the WBC 's demand that he had to defend against it's no.1 contender John Conteh in Oct. 1974 in London, England after Jorge Ahumada's draw against Foster in June 1974. New champion perhaps.?

Once again, Conteh has breezed past an elite opponent in a replay of so many other Conteh matches throughout this tournament. Left handed early and right-handed late, Conteh kept a gutsy Torres under complete control through ten; probably Torres threw up the white flag around the eleventh after which Conteh won rounds with punchstats like 8-1 and 5-2, neither man really trying to hurt the other. Conteh will take some stopping in the final.
