One of Toney's biggest wins was his storage of the very good and underrated Prince Charles Williams ... my question is why did Williams, a career 175 pounder, fight him at 168 ? I haven't seen it in many years but I do remember a very even fight till Williams seemed to get exhausted ..

Money. His best shot for a payday was Toney and James was at 168. And he needed Toney more than Toney needed him.

Figured but interesting how tough guy Toney made him move down ... Charles Williams could fight !

What was interesting to me was how Williams chose to fight. He was a guy with a top jab and boxing skills but he made it a chest to chest fight.
But the fight showed that to be a good decision because, any time he created distance, Toney lit him up.

Williams didn't have no strap. The fight at 175lbs made literally zero sense.

Yeah, Maske hit him out of it. It would have been crazy for Toney to go up and fight him for no title. If you can make his weight, he'll fight you if the money is right.

Prince Charles Williams was a really good fighter, and a genuinely nice guy. He grew up down the street from a good friend of mine, so I got to meet him a few times. Just last week they honored him in his hometown of Mansfield, and named a street after him. Tony and Nate Tubbs were there at the dedication. Charles was an honorable champion who ducked no one. (Unfortunately for him, Toney fought a viciously good fight when they met.)

I actually saw this fight on HBO the night it happened. I was cheering for prince Charles.

That’s a cool story. I thought Charles fought gallantly against Toney. He did the best he could. I didn’t realize the Tubbs brothers new him personally

That is right. Add to that, that the Jones fight at 168 was already agreed.
