Jeff Fenech is a rough customer, but Salvador Sanchez has excelled in defeating aggressive fighter, Danny Little Red Lopez, Wilfredo Gomez, and Azumah Nelson. Sanchez was not your typical Mexican slugger with a textbook left hook to the body. He was a quick counterpuncher, very hard to land on, using the ring against an opponent, causing frustration and exhaustion to his adversaries. He had good head movement as he countered, Sanchez had complete calm and confidence, was a good sportsman, always complimenting his opponents. Fenech , would attempt aggressiveness with blows to the body, only to get's constantly countered by Salvador, who also had a granite chin, and unending stamina. The fight goes 15 rounds, Sanchez by unanimous decision.
Did not watch Sanchez when I was young. Remember when he died. Love watching the old tapes of him. AA vs Sanchez would be a fight we would still be talking about. Thanks everyone for the info.....
Sanches was undoubtedly great as was Fenech IMO. I just feel Sanchez has taken on mythical proportions on here at this point. Befor his accident he struggled with both a 14 fight Nelson who took the fight on 1or 2 weeks notice and won I believe a split over Ford who gave him absolute fits. 50/50 fight for me. Fenech can match his engine no problem. He doesnt hit as hard but hes got pressure and volume and Sanchez was no defensive genius. Pick em
That fight was about to be signed, but Salvador Sanchez was tragically killed in an Auto accident on Aug 12 1982. He was about to leae the 126 lb division, a title unification against WBA champion Eusebio Pedroza did not draw any interest from the promoters, Sanchez was better recognized, his opposition was better.
Your opinion is well taken and respected, aggressive fighters like Danny Little Red Lopez (twice) and Wilfredo Bazooka Gomez were both vanquished easily, Any fighter can have an off night, I am not into excuses but that has been pointed out to me. Azumah Nelson was a last minute substitute for WBC no.1 ranked Mario Miranda, of Colombia in Madison Square Garden. Fenech was not as tough as those two, but different strokes for different strokes my friend.
It's a bowl of Korean fried rice, often served with peppercorn, sushi and sashimi. Oh, and a massive afro.
Lol at "Sanchez was no defensive genius." He was an in the pocket counter puncher like James Toney or Canelo, just relied on the high guard a bit more than them. Salvidor's defense was incredible for his style. He'd stand his ground and make you miss. Not every Defensive genius is a mover.
