Joshua is currently IBO champion and guys like Lewis, Roy Jones, Golovkin and Pacquiao have held it in the past. The WBO was no different in the 90's and you didn't need it to be considered undisputed champion, you still only needed to WBC, WBA and IBF back then.
You have to blame TV for legitimising the WBO. Both ABC and ITV labelled Benn-DeWitt a World Championship fight to about 50M people in US/UK. There were VHS’s made of the fight, labelled for the World Title. SKY paid Eubank £10M for a year of regular defences of the WBO super-middleweight belt. They didn’t even show Roy Jones v Thomas Tate or Toney v Prince Charles Williams. HBO had none of it and didn’t even MENTION the WBO.
How old are you? You know full well that the WBO hadn`t established itself as a respected boxing governing body during the 90`s, none of these guys were considered world champs when they won that title back then, it ws considered an inferior title and none of these boxers were considered the best heavyweight in the world when they won the WBO title, whoever had the other belts in the 90`s were considered real champs, none of these guys beat the best heavyweight in the world when they won these titles, they went for tyhe WBO belt because they weren`t granted a crack at the real champs at that time, Bowe had fell from grace after losing his belts to Holy, you must know that.
Kid Galahad is a solid fighter and only just won his strap, albeit a vacant one, so it’s unfair to have him on this list at least give him time to defend the belt before shaming him.
Since the Proliferation of Governing Bodies and their Alphabet Titles, there have been Dozens of Lesser Chumps from ALL over the world, but the UK were famous for hanging about WBO titles and the like. but again, loads of Fake Champs from the World over,
Shannon Courtenay hands down, nothing in men's boxing can be as ridiculous as her road to becoming a World Champion, nothing.
He is the worst ever just for the above reason - no red face when introduced as a World Champ either.
Bud Sky did show Toney v Williams. It was on the same card as Oscar v Paez. agree ref the WBO points though. Dross belt especially back then.
