Where is he in your ATG ranking right now? How much longer or what else does he need to do to improve wherever he is in your ranking? Apart from a Teo rematch, who else does he need to face rn to further enhance his resume? How old do you think he will be when he falls off his prime?
Already has fell off. Nobody gets physically better after 30. Heavyweight might the odd exception as full physical maturity can benefit them, typically they get tougher. Given Loma & most other boxers with long careers have probably had repeat injuries and general wear and tear issues long before they even hit 30. Lower weight classes the weight cut is of great importance, being a young whipper snapper it's easier to cut.
Tough one. Two losses in 17 pro bouts isn't a great look, but of course fans can and will argue that his first was a robbery and/or debacle of fouling and poor refereeing while he was 'green' in the pro game, and the second they will blame his shoulder and - if they're feeling especially audacious - say it was a 'could go either way' fight (it wasn't, I had it 116-112 López without any real budge room for Loma - but it was just as much not the 119-109 that Julie Lederman had either). I think he stayed too long in the amateurs to really leave himself enough time - and prime - for a real ATG legacy in the pros. But of course turning over much sooner would have meant sacrificing his ATG run in the amateurs, which is what propelled him into such immmediate hype upon debuting. You can't have it all.
Teo Lopez loss is understandable. Teo is a future ATG for me and badass fighter. But Salido loss was bad for Loma's career.
Can i just say, i dont think he won the teo fight, but i also dont think the difference was 116-112. Imo he lost by just a round. I cant knock teo for the rounds that loma did nothing, but when he did turn it on he destroyed teo. Except for the 12th round, i had em as 6-5-1 for teo. I dont wanna validate the injury thing, it sounds like an excuse, but watching him destroy teo from 7-11 doesnt make it seem like his best is behind him. I think talent wise he's up there, but im just really curious how much better he can improve his standing when it comes to his resume. And how much more time does he have left.
Lomachenko could have made a strong case for a place on the ATG list if he had accepted the Manny Pacquiao fight and beat him.
If any of a couple of things had been done just a bit differently and gone the right way, a tweak or two here and there...which I guess can be said of a lot of guys on the ATG bubble.
I mean that salido loss should not count. Salido refused to make weight in the official weigh in and was 147lbs during fight night for a featherweight bout. Then lets talk about the over 100 low blows that werent called, and he rocked salido in the 12th but the dumbest ref of all time warned loma for holding when it was salido holding, just right when loma was about to finish him off. A teo rematch issa must.
Not now, maybe not ever. He would need a win in the Lopez rematch plus at least 10 more wins to be an acceptable candidate for HOF. However he may not fight long enough to get those wins. I'm fine with HOF entry as a Amateur, if there is such a thing.
Eastern Europeans place too much emphasis on Olympic and amateur glory. He should have turned professional at least 4 years earlier.
Great resume but not an All Time Great resume, for me. All just opinion. I'm sure some people out there think Walters and Marriaga and Linares are pseudo legends too, when the claim suits them.
Yeah, but I think in this instance, it couldn't have come together more perfectly for Lomachenko. The only available active ATG was willing to fight him, who happens to be similar in size, past it enough that he's a safer proposal but still a prestigious, resume-boosting scalp, a big ass paycheck on a massive stage... Lomachenko done ****ed up by not taking the fight, imo.
