So was Joe Frazier, who is probably the first name that most people think of when asked to name boxers with great left hooks.
Not too sure but I do recall someone on here mentioning that he had a childhood accident with some machinery that would have a lasting effect on his right arm. Don’t know how true that is but I first noticed he was right handed when I saw a documentary about Joe and Ali and you saw Joe sitting down and writing things down with his right hand. Incidentally, the tennis player Rafa Nadal, probably the greatest left handed player ever is also right handed but changed to playing tennis left handed as a youth because his coach thought that it would give him a advantage over his opponents who were all predominantly right handed players.
1. Robinson- speed with pure one shot power. Could whip it on the move, double and triple it. I swore i saw him throw like 5 or 6 in a row in a effortless motion. 2. Frazier- it was a hard hook, not the most powerful but it had shock effect. Joe could throw it hard for 15 rounds, non stop. Under/Over Over/Under. Almost like a machine or Bionic arm. 3. Chavez- just perfecto. His hook downstairs a work of art. 4. Louis- just, compact, one shot will stiffen your joints. Could throw it off the jab in a flash. 5. Liston- see above, maybe not as quick as Joe's but perhaps even more power which i don't say lightly. The Brown Bomber was close to perfect. 6. RockaBye- Was the Gold Standard for the Mexican hook to the liver. When someone gets stopped with a punch to the liver Oliveres often gets mentioned even to this day. 7. Cuevas- looks wide but it was fast and you better get out of the way. I don't even know if I would block one. It carried force. As a kid I saw Pipino stop Pete Ranzany at old Hughes Stadium in the rain. It didn't last long. 8. Patterson- undersized but his hook had heavyweight power. Very fast if you let him get off. 9. Felix Trinidad- At '47 and '54 it was a serious force. Fight changing power for 12 rounds. He could whip at anytime. Very quick. 10. ETM- Similar to Joe Louis every way. 1 shot power.
