Call me crazy, but I've often seen early heavyweight Holyfield as a slightly larger, much tougher-skinned, and drastically roided-up Jerry Quarry. They both struck me -- no pun intended -- as mobile, combination throwing counterpunchers with a penchant for brawling at inopportune times, and they even would move/dance in the same narrow stance when Evander was younger. (Although Quarry did that occasional awkward forward bend at the waist.) But it wouldn't be the first time I was misled by superficial similarities. So I'm calling on the Board's superior knowledge here: just how similar *do* you believe Holyfield and Quarry were?
Some similarities no doubt but Jerry was more of a counter puncher and Evander was more of a boxer puncher too me. Both could be dragged into brawls but I think Evander would be more of the aggressor looking to out fight/out slug where Jerry was always looking to counter in exchangers. On a side note, a fight between the two would have been one for the ages.
Jerry Quarry at his peak was a good counterpuncher, so was Evander Holyfield. Both could hit and take out their adversaries.
So very true, Jerry's style at times was reckless, it cost him on June 23 1969 against Smoking Joe Frazier and George Chuvalo in Dec 1969.
You dont have to put multiple threads up every day. Quarry was nothing like Holy. Stylewise or anything
Had I never posted this thread, you would never have had the opportunity to inform me of my ignorance, and I never would have been informed of it. Seems a net loss to me.
Stylistic similarities but Evander had more than roids and tougher skin, he was simply a superior ring general and infighter. I can't see a fit Evander getting outboxed by a punch drunk Machen or laying an egg against Chuvalo. Much too smart for that.
It would be helpful if you could elaborate on the differences, if you don't mind. To my untrained eye, the younger Evander looks like he has the same mobile counterpuncher thing going on as Quarry. Not identical, but there are echoes I'm seeing.
Holyfield defeated Cooper by TKO. Quarry was KOed by Chuvalo. No comparison. Holyfield 38-39 years old against Ruiz. Gimme a break. He still arguably won 2 out of 3 against a prime fighter. Quarry was well washed up by that age, Evander was still hanging with the top 5 until he was 40 on skill alone.
You tell him buddy. Some people have issues at home and can only deal with them on this site, probably afraid of the Mrs.
