I just saw Dela being interviewed and he blathered on and you just know he is drunk every night.

I'm not a fan of either from a personality standpoint but to me there is no denying their ability to fight. I totally get the Narcissistic comment but when pushed hard in the ring they did not fold. Leonard fought like a true champ in the first Hearns fight and overcame a badly injured eye and being behind on the cards to pull out his signature win. Oscar was also down on a lot of folks cards against Quartey but came roaring back in the 12th to get the decision. Both guys left it all out there more than once.

I will go to my grave thinking Hagler beat Leonard and Quartey beat Oscar but both of those guys earned my respect for their fighting abilities when it mattered. I do agree that they were about as sincere as a politician when speaking to the press.

To answer your question, Oscar is more annoying/fake to me.

I couldn't stand Oscar in interviews. His persona always seemed manufactured and he's probably lucky there was no social media during his day.

That being said he was a great fighter and really took on all comers. While some guys today are content picking up paychecks for fighting lesser opposition and waiting for a lottery payday, Oscar went out and fought everyone he could (I'm sure there were some people he skipped I'm forgetting but his record speaks for itself)

It's interesting that these two rub people the wrong way, since they both present / act like people from a higher socioeconomic stratum than most fighters. (Leaving aside whether they actually did come from such a background.) Same reason people didn't like Tunney, or the Klitschkos for that matter. Arguably Joshua, too. A guy who sounds like a spoiled middle class kid isn't supposed to beat up working class fighters. Goes against the sport's long-standing mythology as the great meritocracy.

They were street guys for sure. Oscar was from east LA and Ray from an east coast slum. Both marketed themselves to maximize their dollar after winning Olympic gold. Nothing wrong with that, it just seemed so manufactured.

There is just something about the both of them that rubbed people the wrong way. They both were clearly coached to try and cross over to the main stream and always came across as full of themselves.

Leonard came from a middleclass upbringing in Palmer Park Maryland. And DLH did not grow up poor.

I thought Ray was one of 7 or 8 and his dad worked in a supermarket? Maybe I went to far with slum.

Prime for prime, sugar. But Oscar is still in his dickhead prime whereas sugar has calmed down a bit.
