When did Tyson start getting hyped?

They had shown the Radcliffe fight also just previous. I remember watching it on world of sport (not live of course). For the love of god i dont know how or why i remember this but Im pretty sure it was shown around the 4pm shot when the wrestling was supposed to start but given it didnt last too long, big daddy and co got their airtime

As people noted above, Tyson was known in the ams and even before his Olympic qualifying bout with Tillman.

Glad Cooney is mentioned. The Great White Hope who got exposure when he beat the name fighters. Old but name fighters from the Golden 70's. In a way a prototype.

Jacobs and Cayton took orders from Cus and did a tremendous job from the get go. Team Tyson was locked and loaded. They used to pay Sports reporters to watch and then air his films for late night exposure. It worked, hook, line and sinker.

Now everyone copies that hype machine. It's the reason why the 90's had so many good heavyweights by following Team Tyson's formula.

I remember seeing Tyson on Grandstand coming up the ranks in like 85. Harry Carpenter had a lot to do with it.

I remember it well, Spinks and Czyz were shown, and then we were treated to Tyson, but only after a repeat of Tyson/Frazier, which was annoying! ;)

But Daddy et al were save as they had by that time given the lunchtime slot (I liked my pro wrestling), as World of Sport had finished the year before. But you are right, the boxing was shown, just as a stand alone show.

People were heading to the D’Amato gym and looking for Kid Dynamite signing their stuff. Some ordered a "For the HW Champion of the World" at the time he was a teen.

it was??? ya got me there mate. I stand corrected. Coulda swore it was on world of sport and even better i coulda swore i have it on VHS but im clearly mistaken. Much in the same way kendo nagasaki tried to have it out with giant haystacks and was eating through a straw for a month with 1 swipe of haystacks woolly coat :) whilst all the old biddys ringside switched between their knitting and shouting obscenities. On a sidenote, apart from sportsnight, was there a better intro music to the boxing then ITVs??
