Just watched back the fight, I only saw two headbutts and both looked accidental... Am I missing something, I read a few articles saying Warrington was purposely headbutting and it should have been a DQ.
Warrington was extra leery of Lara's punches and tried to come in low to evade Lara's looping punches around his guard and when he changed levels from low to high Lara got butted hard. Tbh that's perfect headbutting technique but I didn't feel that Warrington was purposely imploying it , he seemed a bit too shaken in there and was resetting really far whenever Lara connected with him.
I don't think Warrington headbutted Lara to deliberately cause the cut and end the fight.. I don't think that was the motive. But I do think Warrington was using his head as a weapon, he came out for BOTH rounds with a ton of grease over his hairline/forehead. When have you seen a fighter come out for the first round with thick grease on his forehead and hairline? Anyway, I believe Warrington wanted to rough up Lara, make Lara back up, get him going backwards, stop Lara lunging in, make him cautious. Lara was caught with the head TWICE, raised it to the referee TWICE before the cut, Warrington lunged in with the head a few times. The referee did virtually NOTHING, If the referee had warned him forcefully after the second time the cut may not have happened, Warrington may have thought twice. In my opinion Warrington was going to keep doing it until the referee was stern with him, it's the same old Matchroom privilege. I'm telling you now, if Lara had gone in with the head 3 times inside 2 rounds, he would have had points taken and probably on the verge of a DQ.
Not to nit pick, but how can you say Warrington wasn't intentionally head butting, then say he purposely used his head as a weapon?
I don't think either man quit. I think both genuinely believed they would win, and the way the first two rounds went it was anyone's fight. I'd love to see it again tbh.
I also don't think the butts were intentional either, saying that though Lara would have caught up to Warrington sometime and put his lights out.
Sorry, I should have explained myself better. I don't believe Warrington thought he'd end the fight like that, I don't think Warrington was thinking "I'll headbutt him, cut him and get the fight stopped" But I believe Warrington used his head to try and stop Lara lunging in with those looping shots and rough him up. Get what I'm saying?
Can't objectively measure intent, but he did say afterwards he thought he'd nicked the eye with a punch in the 1st and then after that we saw a few butts which always landed on or near the left eye, three or four of them. My gut feeling is he was being honest about the nick, then felt the power of Lara's punches, which must have brought back some bad memories, and wanted to dissuade Lara from pressing the action. Desperation rather than cynicism may have been the driver to target the eye he knew was already damaged and I don't think the butts were accidental. He mentioned a 'clash of styles' being the issue but I don't recall the same clash being a feature of their first fight, albeit Warrington was defending differently in the two fights. Frampton is quoted after his fight with Warrington that he was a bit careless with his head in their bout too, so there's a track record to consider here. Let's just say the jury's out on this one...
