I'd pick Moore at their bests, but I think Tunney would batter a pre-prime Moore, who had a lot of trouble with good jobbers.
I think he could and he had style to do so, but I'd bet on Moore catching him and finishing the job at some point. Peak Moore wasn't old, washed up Dempsey - he was much better at creating openings.
Oh I don't know, Will. Not sure Tunney has to have a local decision for a win over Archie. If anyone could beat Moore then I'd say Tunney at his lightheavy best could. Maybe in a series of say 3,then he gets at least one of the wins.
I don't know either Fergy. I think I've seen all of Tunney's filmed fights, and I just don't think he's great enough of a fighter to beat a top form Archie Moore. I know he's tough, so I think he would last the distance, but I think Moore is both the better puncher and the better boxer.
That would be a great fight. Archie Moore was more versatile and had an excellent defense (his cross armed guard with great upper body movement) combined with his skills as a counter puncher. It wouldn't be easy for Tunney and not without danger as well to hit Moore clean. In addition, Moore was able to fight effectively at different ranges and he could control the pace of a fight. Moore could handle taller, strong heavyweights. He was arguably the better puncher and finisher but Tunney's punching power was decent too and might be a little underrated. Both fighters had amazing mental strength and ring IQ. They were well experienced at their best, could throw all kinds of punches and had great chins. I think Tunney had the better footwork. He was a bit taller and he probably had slight reach advantages. Tunney was very confident and impressive in his last bouts and I also think he had the higher workrate. 20 rounds would be tough for both and out of their comfort zone. Archie Moore could knock Tunney out. I don't think, though. Of course, Moore would be dangerous but Tunney never lost a fight by knockout. Tunney could wear him down but the Mongoose was pretty durable as well. All in all, I favor Tunney (maybe 70:30). I think the most likely outcome would be a victory on points for Tunney.
Do you think that Tunney would have had more chance, if the fight was set at 10 or 12 rounds say, than 20, of getting a decision win.? Does the longer distance favour him or Archie.?
Why the **** 20 rounds ??!?? That's way too much. Anyway, Tunney stands a chance, but I wouldn't bet on it, my money's on Moore
