For argument's sake this will be 1920 rules, less clinching but no neutral corner yet. Best of both worlds. Schmeling is underrated and in this case, I believe he would outbox the sluggish Johnson, this ain't no little Burns or old Jeffries. Based on footage of both I think Schmeling take this, superior speed and combos here.

I prefer the skills and power of Schmeling to what I see from Johnson. It could be that the available film doesn't flatter JJ but to me Max passes the eye test and JJ leaves a lot of questions to be answered. I'll also say that the amount of clinching and wrestling JJ is allowed to do will affect the outcome. Obviously the more mauling he is able to make the fight, the more chance he has of pulling a rabbit out the hat in the later rounds.

I don't think the greatest defensive Heavyweight Champion in history has to pull any rabbit out of a hat to beat anyone. Schmeling would be lucky to even land.

I like Schmeling’s fighting style better but not sure how this one would unfold. Johnson was very good at neutralizing attacks and tying men up on the inside. He also had unbelievable stamina, durability and power and could fight brutally for practically endless numbers of rounds. Tough fight either way but a part of me is leaning towards Jack Johnson.

Uncle Jack would be coming up against someone who has no idea how to defend against his clinching, soiling and rough housing I pick Jack to stop him before ten in a very boring slow beating.

Uncle Jack will come to realize about something called "refereeing". Notice:
The Slayer of MWs would find it difficult to bully a man of Schmeling's size and ability.

Jack Dempsey got away with way more **** in the 20's than we have film of Johnson doing.

Schmeling was not any bigger than many of Jack Johnson's opponents, and significantly smaller than several.

Than on film we mostly have him toying with overmatched opponents, doesn't mean that was all he could do.

Different kind of ****, though. Johnson was octopus grappling. Dempsey's fouling was more entertaining than Johnson's tactical clinch wrestling.

Dempsey did tons of hitting and holding too, though was far more aggresive.

Also low blows, and just about every other foul under the sun.
