With 'Young" Foremans lack of basic boxing I have to believe it. Quarry also knocked Ken Norton out cold too apparently.
I do know there was a rumor of a potential fight between Champion George Foreman and challenger Jerry Quarry, especially after Quarry's one round kayo of Earnie Shavers on Dec 14 1973, in Madison Square Garden. Instead Ken Norton got his opportunity at Foreman's title on March 26 1974, in Caracas, Venezuela. We all now how that fight turned out for Ken.
Even if Quarry got over on George sparring if they actually ever did come fight night another KO for George. No knock on Jerry its just how it is.
I don’t know. I remember Jerry commentating on a Foreman fight (maybe against Le Doux?) and he was basically in awe of George, saying he sparred against him and he was awesome and the strongest man he’d shared a ring with bar none. Nothing about schooling him anyway. I’d massively favour Foreman in an actual fight too. I love Jerry but Foreman was a real force at his peak and he’d roll over the always tough, brave and game (but much, much smaller and always hittable) Quarry.
In any event, Foreman beat him. If it was the late 1960's Quarry who had his own father in his corner, well he slug it out with George and he will pay for it. If it was the early 1970's Quarry who had gil Glancy in his corner, he use his great boxing skills, move and counter punch, but Foreman cut the ring off and force him to fight a war, which Foreman wins.
Quarry would make it competitive at first but slowly become a punching bag throughout the fight. Foreman TKO after Quarry takes a bad beating on the ropes.
Foreman by stoppage in an ugly fight. Jerry Quarry might land 100% of his punches but still be run.over.
Yeah, an Occams Razor thing with Quarry being a combo of too small and basically too easy to hit despite his skill and resilience.
Think it would look a lot like a Holyfield fight with him would. In his prime anyway not the old foreman. They would trade Quarry would be the better till he gets caught.
Who knows what would happen? It is said that it is the one fight Foreman never wanted. He turned the fight down. it would be interesting to see what Gil Clancy thought about this matchup.
At that point in time when George Foreman was in his first title reign, (1973-1974) he was handled by D.Sadler and Archie Moore. Gil Clancy entered the picture after Foreman was dethroned by Muhammad Ali on Oct 30 1974.
No disrespect to Jerry who was a fine boxer and a warrior but I've never been one of those convinced that he would have been a serious threat to George Foreman.
