Heard this before, but would be interested in hearing your perspective on Corbett and Tunneys rewriting of history.
Both, basically rewrote boxing history, in their favor., and gratuitously so! For example, we often hear that Jeffries lost every round against Corbett, until the fateful round! Or that Tunney only lost to Greb, because he was fouled, and that he won every fight thereafter! The newspapers at the time, had very different opinions, to these two men!
To add to this: it's possible for someone to be sincere, but wrong. Foreman may well genuinely believe that Mobutu's goons drugged him. And frankly, that would hardly register on the radar of nefarious crap Mobutu did, being a dictator and all.
They sold both sold narratives about their fights, which later became established opinion, that are clearly at odds with what the ringside reporters said. For example Jim Corbett claimed that he won every round of his first fight with Jeffries, up to the fateful 23rd, and a lot of people believe this to this day. If you look at the ringside reports, it was actually a fairly close fight going into the 23rd. Gene Tunney claimed that he lost his first fight with Greb, because Greb headbutted him, which opened up a cut above his eye. The ringside reports say that the cut was caused by a legal punch.
