Cooney wasn't seriously injured he came out of retirement to fight Foreman, he just went back into retirement.
Thanks! I saw the fight on video, and Clooney's face looked like hamburger. It looked like he was out on his feet. Well, that was when he was able to stand.
Yeah IDK why other than money Cooney did it, he hadn't fought in a few years. He did rattle George big time with a big left hook and Foreman said Cooney was one of the hardest punchers he ever fought. When two sluggers meet especially at Heavyweight it usually doesn't go far.
Well he was knocked out cold! But within a few minutes he was back on his feet as you can see during Foreman's post fight interview. Usually these quick brutal knockouts, while devastating looking arent as serious as long beatdowns that fighters sustain.
Cooney said he was feeling good when he took the fight, and unlike against his previous fight against Michael Spinks, he had been completely sober for a couple years. That and Gil Clancy agreed to train him. Clancy always thought that Cooney had a ton of unrealized potential, and had his eye on him since Cooney was an amateur.
Conney was hungover against Spinks. He was in far better condition against Foreman but got clobbered early.
Pooe Cooney never stood a chance against Foreman. What if peak Cooney fought George Foreman from early 70s? It would be brutal KO1 for Foreman. Cooney's glass chin would've never been able to take Foreman's uppercuts.
You are overrating Spinks. The Cooney who fought Foreman would have done far better against Spinks, probably knocking him out.
