I know that there have been quite a few threads on this. But anyway, it's an interesting fight and I think the last prime Hagler vs. prime Monzon thread is already a while ago. So tough to decide. I think Hagler was maybe a bit more impressive during his reign. On the flip side, Monzon was already 28 when he fought against Benvenuti for the title (arguably his prime). Afterwards he had more and more problems with his hands (arthritis) and since 1973 he had a bullet in his shoulder (his wife shot him). Hagler, on the other hand, became champion at 26 and he had with 28 one of his most impressive title defenses against Tony Sibson. All in all, I slightly favor Hagler at his best. I think he was overall more skilled. Monzon was cold-blooded and effective though. I wouldn't be surprised about a Monzon win either.
Always has and always will be a 50 - 50 fight ,,, no matter how many kick and scream otherwise same with their historical rating .. they are as equal as equal can be
If forced to pick i would ever so damn slightly, with the difference being minuscule go for Monzon. Lets say 53-47, not even 55-45. I'd not argue with anyone going either way as long as they acknowledge it would be a close hard fight with no stoppage. I think a stoppage prediction would be crazy unless you somehow hedged your bet on a Hagler cut but i think his skin would hold up just fine at his peak.
Monzon together with Jackson is one of the few middleweight who can drop Hagler imo. 60/40 fight for Monzon.
Btw, a great thread about Carlos Monzon and other boxers around that time from another boxing forum. https://www.*********.com/forum/index.php?threads/getting-to-know-carlos-monzon.2837/
Hmm, maybe the link isn't working. It's from ********* (Getting To Know Carlos Monzon). Okay, anyway. (it is still hidden)
Monzon has the same sort of system Wladimir Klitschko has. Control with the jab, create space to muffle attacks and punish opponents that are too adventurous. Hagler was very good in every department, and that alone is a basis for picking him against Monzon. However what makes me think that maybe Monzon should be favoured on points is that Hagler was pretty cautious against Duran, and respected the other guy's abilities. I think Hagler would have to be on fire against Monzon, because if he's cautious and tries to outbox him he's probably going to lose on points.
I'm gonna go with Hagler to win by a late stoppage or maybe a decision. I think he could give Monzon different looks, keep him off balance. Hagler was a guy that could switch stances and be effective in either one. Monzon was a great ring general but perhaps here he meets his match. If you gave Carlos the same look predictable he would pull away by midfight. It is an intriguing matchup.
Providing Marvin does n't come in all cautious as he sometimes did against elite fighters,I back him to beat Carlos by a close UD. Both guys tough as teak but I see Hagler's skill level superior.
Other than the Duran fight, when did this occur? I know he stupidly started orthodox in the SRL bout but yeah
