I was just wondering why Usyk has to fight pretty much everyone in their backyard. Loma has pretty much all his fights in the U.S. now. Is there not much of a market for a big fight in Kiev?
Ukraine consistently produce top boxers. But it's a very poor country, one of the poorest in Europe, with a war going on in the East. There hardly any pro boxing shows, no big promoters. There's no pro boxing infrastructure. It's amazing the success of Ukraine considering there's no pro shows, no big promoters, no top facilitties. I recall in the last years of the World Series of Boxing, despite being one of the top teams. Ukraine didn't even have the money to fund a team for it! Ukraine's success is down to being tough, hard people with strong discipline, hard work and good genes/DNA. They don't make any excuses for their lack of opportunities/facilities/promoters like other countries do, their success is down to hard work and having high standards. Wladimir only fought there once in his entire career, Vasily has never fought there as a pro. Usyk hasn't in years. I wouldn't expect the situation to change anytime soon.
What is his fan base like in Germany? Obviously that is where the Klitschko brothers had much of their success, seems a logical home field for him
Klitschkos were popular in Germany because they trained and fought there and became fluent in German. I don't think Usyk has a big fanbase in Germany
Usyk was asked a question about Crimea and he said it belongs to god, and media took it as him avoiding so he wasn't super supported for the fight like he should be. he still got a lot of support but it wasn't talked about as much. however once he won it's been over media all day
I don't know why Canadian promoters don't sign more Ukrainian fighters, apparently there is an estimated 1.3 million persons of full or partial Ukrainian origin residing in Canada
Does Usyk still live and train in Ukraine? I get the impression from Instagram videos that Loma spends most of his time in the US (this may just be for fight camps), while Usyk seems to still be primarily based in the Ukraine.
So they wanted him to specify that it belonged to Ukraine instead of Russia? Do some people in Ukraine actually support Russia over the Ukraine when it comes to Crimea? Sorry these are probably stupid questions, but I’ve gotten disillusioned with politics, so I don’t watch the news much anymore.
There is a large Russian population in Ukraine for a lot of historical reasons, when the Soviet Union broke up they were left stranded in a lot of ways. This was the justification for Russia taking Crimea. Usyk and Loma, particularly Loma, seem to have Russian tendencies to me? I can't really tell but just how they speak, etc.
I found an article on this: http://thecomeback.com/queensberryr...r-for-oleksandr-usyk-or-vasyl-lomachenko.html
Yeah, I’m sure they have to walk a fine line then to not make a sizeable portion of the country mad based on what they say. I’m a big fan of Ukrainian boxers, especially Loma, Usyk, Gvozdyk, and the Klitschko brothers, but I really don’t know much about the country itself. I should definitely try to study up on it some more.
That’s really interesting. I wonder how Loma and Usyk get along with the Klitschko brothers. Because aren’t they very pro-Ukraine in regards to the conflict with Russia? I would assume Vitali is being the mayor of Kiev.
