At 6'3", 220 lbs Usyk is built more like the old school heavies of the 70s and 80s as opposed to the 6'5"+ giants who have been reining the last few years or decades maybe. Will this signal that HWs don't need to be SHW sized to succeed in modern boxing?
Not really, its just uzyk is a once in a generation talent. We still have Andy Ruiz/chisora who are smaller Heavyweights but always come in large. Edit - I suspect we will see more in the coming years just because people copy/repeat styles used by other fighters.
A good point, and perhaps yes. Maybe more cruiserweights will fancy coming up now they have seen the path, and realise superior skill levels can be a recipe for success at HW
Nah not really. I'm sure if you asked Usyk how sparring Vlad went he'd tell you it was a lot harder than fighting Joshua. The giants of today, besides Fury, lack the skill of the giants a decade or two ago. Usyk will feast on the "in progress" giants of today, absolutely.
No Because Fury has already shifted the meta by being an even bigger super heavy whilst keeping the movement of smaller men which has NEVER been seen before. Once Fury retires though nobody will replace him and it will go back to 230/240 pound men or men like Usyk. Usyk Fury is an insane fight because it's basically the first of his kind in HW boxing in Fury Vs a modern day Holyfield.
I feel that the existence of the Cruiserweight division prevents this from happening. Why would you want to fight at heavyweight, giving away significant amounts of height, weight, and reach, and probably taking much more damage per punch than any other division ... when you could fight at your own size and achieve glory at Cruiserweight? It isn't really an intelligent decision. Usyk is an exception because he did everything with relative ease at CW, was relatively large for the Cruiserweight division, and moreso had every other quality aside from excessive size (and excessive power) in the extreme to make his dream of taking over Heavyweight also a realistic prospect, and he could do it in only a handful of fights.
If a fighter is good enough then he is big enough. It might well give encouragement to smaller heavies or cruisers to move up, but then the 6'5+ and 240+ pound fighters are not just going to disappear. Usyk however is something of unique fighter or at least a rare breed with his skillset and boxing brain.
Usyk is way heavier then almost every pre 90 fighter. His training methods are highly modern. But he would get killed anyway by wilder or fury, people just dont want to accept that they now **** about boxing and try to say that aj is not complete trash.
No, it just signals a return to Joshua being a big stiff glass jawed bodybuilder whos best win is a clinically obese grinning mexican on points.
