Former contender/champion retirement plans?

    About the Bios. Bivins and Satterfield could’ve wrote some awesome ones with the comp they faced. I’m always clueless why boxers don’t document more of what they did... camp stories, prep, training,tips ect. People eat that stuff up.

    I'm envisioning a fighter who, after fight prep is done at his training camp, talks to a ghostwriting scribe after hours about his life while watching "Bar Rescue".

    Also, there have been a lot of mediocre competitors in all kinds of sports who've managed to write popular autobiographies. So I agree: I don't think champion status is essential, either.

    A separate, dedicated training book is a good call as well. "Train With A Pro," or something like that. Maybe with an instructional video series like Mayweather, Mercer, Roach, et al.

    Oh, and if you have any rights to your fights, there's Toney's YouTube channel angle, too. That at least has the advantage that you're continuing to directly earn money from the things you did in the ring.

    Tunney indeed married a rich heiress but his goal before doing so was to make a million dollars. He accomplished this almost entirely by his purse for the second Dempsey fight. In fact, for his purse he had Tex Rickard make out a check for a million dollars and he gave Rickard a personal check for the difference. In his post boxing career, Tunney was on the board of directors for something like a dozen large corporations. Tunney passed at age 81 in 1978 and his widow, the former Polly Lauder, passed away in 2008 at the age of 100.

    He did.

    Ian Darke did a superb documentary on Joe Louis many years ago on sky sports, and he mentions Joes troubles and how Max came to his aid.

    I wish i could find and watch that again, it was both good and heartbreaking to watch.

    To some extent, fighters don't need promoters as much as they used to. At least to my completely untrained eye.

    There's also the reality show circuit, but it seems that's mostly confined to champions like Foreman and Holyfield.

    You can also take up a brief MMA or kickboxing career in older age for proportionally greater money than your late-career boxing ability merits. (Mercer, Toney, sort-of Dempsey.)

    The training industry will force you into the same competitive setup that boxing itself has, with a few top guys making lots of money. Although even here, the richest trainers are making significantly less per fight than the fighters. They still make a bit more than I thought, though. If you are incredibly lucky in the fighter you get to train, you may break the million dollar barrier for a fight.

    Different skillset from being a champion, though, so you might be an OK boxer but a great coach (or vice versa). Might not hurt to spend off times helping train people when you're still in the middle of your own career, to develop a skillset as a teacher.
