Promising fighters whose careers were cut short

Funny how he died, though. Such a shame his g/f had to do time - maybe it was karma for leaving her husband. But I really don't know how you'd blame her.

Something makes me think Everett and Parks would have been more than just sparring PARTNERs. Wink, wink; nudge, nudge.

 

Eddie Gregory (or whatever you want to call him). If he had stayed the course, he'd have been an ATG. Maybe a little small for LHw, but super promising.

 

Yes, he was extremely talented.

 

Ketchel had serious milage on the clock, and it was showing. Roy Jones Jr., is a guy most agree fought on too long. His boxrec lists him as having fought 495 rounds, from 1989 to 2018. Stanley Ketchel's boxrec record puts him at 485 rounds from 1903 to 1910, and that's with a much more aggressive style.

In spite of his age, it's unlikely he had more than a couple big fights left in him.

 

He stated he made enough money that he lost motivation. He was very overweight in his latter fights, so I think that's probably true

 

Jesse James Hughes was USbA welterweight champion when he was murdered in 1995. He was on a nice run of cable-televised fights and was a popular attraction — one of those guys who usually fell behind in fights but wore down opponents on willpower and had the starch to rally.

He wasn’t going to beat the Pernell Whitakers or Tito Trinidads of the time but was likely headed to a title shot due to his rise. Maybe a WBO belt would have been within reach.

But James had some street in him and some bad habits — he apparently would set up crack cocaine buys and then beat up dealers and take their stash and money. So he was probably headed for a crash one way or another. The belief is he was killed while doing this or perhaps as revenge for doing this.

RIP Jesse James.

 

We don’t know what he would have done at 130 had he moved up: exciting offerings with Bobby Chacon and Bazooka Limon and Boza-Edwards and the like would have been on tap. I think he outclasses all those guys, and I believe Sammy Serrano was a belt holder around that time whom he would have surely beaten.

Arguello was a junior welter by this juncture so that’s three divisions above Sanchez’s last fight. Even if Sal moves up to challenge him at 135 it’s probably a bridge too far, but it would have been exciting to see.

 

Todd Hickman was getting some nice press as an amateur and had amateur wins over Orlando Canizales and Steve McCrory. He got to 2-0 as a pro before apparently being gunned down in some sort of gang activity.

 

Sanchez would be my pick as well even though he was already an ATG at his death who knows what he could have achieved if he had moved up from FW to fight the likes of Arguello, Camacho, Mancini and Pryor. Incredible fights we never got to see.

 

Damn. You are not kidding. Like Floyd without the schizo hopping around. I think he does to a prime GGG what Whitaker did to an old Chavez.

 

It moments like these when I lose faith in humanity.

In a way, Shorty Hogue. He had a good record and beat some good fighters but too many tough fights too close and living hard did him in.
