- Walker brought the fight to him, just like the larger and more mobile Conn would. Sharkey didn't like opponents who didn't stand still to let him hit them. Did Jack run hot and cold? yes. not sure how that's conn's headache. - Too bad the film doesn't shot a nut shot. Please watch fights before discussing them. - Conn stopped Pastor. Remember when you were challenged to prove Sharkey was better than pastor, but chose to be snarky instead? Conn had Louis rattled and took everything Louis could throw at him for over 12 rounds. Even the KO sequence was absolutely epic. Sharkey never followed up like that when he had an opponent hurt. Again, the Loughran fight is a terrible anomaly.
The Walker fight was a draw. In terms of what the papers thought, I went through every report I could find
If you can't see the low blows, I can only assume you've only seen the low quality versions, in the better quality ones it's blatant. Even more so in the colorised version. You can clearly see Dempsey throwing multiple low blows against Sharkey This content is protected Dempsey did far worse than what Harry Wills was DQ'd against Sharkey for. He had been DQ'd, there'd have been no argument that it was the wrong thing to do, and a lot of people would probably think of him as having fouled out of the fight. As for the best Sharkey, this is probably his best performance on film. I actually like his fight with Dempsey. I know Jack D was past but it showed how good he could be. His problem could be his temperament of course, but on his best day he was an handful. Maybe Wills too. Or Godfrey.
Sharkey defeated a bunch of well-known fighters and top contenders in the 20s. He was already considered the successor to Gene Tunney and was the favorite in the first fight against Max Schmeling. However, he was also known for his inconsistency. Sometimes he boxed brilliantly and sometimes rather mediocre. I guess he had a pretty complex career.
He's better than he's remembered for. It's just his legacy was ruined by said inconsistency. He liked fighters who'd let him hit them and then would lay down. That was not Conn.
So a FAT Welterweight probably beat him. Conn was much more elusive than Walker, and a bigger fighter with more effective offense against Heavyweights. Fat Walker beat him and old Loughran beat him, but we really want to say he has a chance against Conn.... This is why aliens fly past our planet.
THOSE ARE BODY SHOTS. And they are beautiful. Even Blue, the guy who refurbished the fight, believes they are body shots. Look at Jack's reaction to getting hit. We have seen Floyd react similarly to body shots - McGregor and Judah fights. Sharkey also KOd Delaney and Stribling (Sam Langford 2.0). I think he's better than people remember him for. It's his inconsistency that hampered his legacy. But there is nothing here that suggests he can handle Conn's mobility and control of range. He will take LOTS of body shots from Conn.
