Armstrong for me. Holding three belts simultaneously when there were only eight of them is just remarkable. Did anyone else even hold two belts simultaneously when there were only eight of them?
Duran better on inside. But the cardio of Armstrong is otherworldly. H2H - Even P4P - Armstrong 135 - Even. But if you put a gun to my head, Duran.
This by a razor thin margin. All Categories Duran I still have Armstrong higher all time. But it is close.
Interesting thing about Henry Armstrong, although I've known about his great feat of simultaneously holding three world championships for as long as I can remember I really didn't know very much about his title reigns. It ends up that he really only had one reign. He never defended the featherweight crown and never fought again in that weight class. As a lightweight he won the title from Lou Ambers. Defended it once against a gentlemen named Lew Feldman who already had 45 career losses and then lost the title in a rematch with Ambers. It was as a welterweight where he truly earned his Hall of Fame stripes. He won a wide decision over Barney Ross to win the crown, made close to 20 successful title defenses and finally lost the belt to Fritzie Zivic. With all of this in mind I will take Duran head-to-head at lightweight and Armstrong head to head at 147. I'll go with Duran pound for pound and give Armstrong a very slight edge as an inside fighter.
Armstrong no question. The greatest pressure fighter ever and his resume is stacked with hard fights. I have no qualms with people even having Armstrong as the greatest fighter ever or Top 3 P4P. At his prime he was a monster and in multiple divisions. He would give anyone hell from 126-135 any HOF.
Duran was definitely better on the inside. Armstrong as great as he was absorbed a lot of shots that Duran didn't, Roberto was too slick on the inside for that.
