Didn't Tyson avoid the trend? I seem to recall Tyson saying that Klitschko and even Wilder would have done well in his own era. In Johnson's own day, Sullivan was also pretty gracious about Jeffries, if I remember a previous thread in Classic correctly. I'm sure there are others.

I agree that many ex-champs can be disparaging of current fighters, but Johnson's condemnation is pretty...thorough...even by ex-champ standards.

 

I think what a fighter says about other eras often says more about them than anything else.

 

And there was that recently excavated thread where somebody said Dempsey spoke equally well of Jeffries.

(Jeffries's own comment about Johnson -- that he couldn't have beaten him even in his prime -- also fits here, ironically.)

 

I've seen Dempsey speak pretty highly of Louis, at least at times.
