And obviously I'm talking Spinks circ 1985,not Spinks now..

But yes, let's say he's being LH champ unbeaten for a number of years but he's bypassing cruiser, to challenge the big boys.?

What type of odds are we talking about, for him to win any thing of note in the top division?

He could conceivably pull off an upset and pick off some sort of Heavyweight title belt, but that's not a given. He came into a perfect set of circumstances when he won the Lineal Heavyweight Championship. Today, those circumstances are not there.

He'd have a good chance to pick up the title, but he wouldn't hold it for long.
    Same as in his day.

Spinks had more than enough ability and experience to pick up a title, but just like during his actual career I see his injuries catching up with him sooner than later, so he wouldn’t hold the title for long.

One of the problems that Spinks had during his HW campaign is that the Tyson fight overshadows everything.

Had he continued to campaign post Tyson by facing Dokes, Damiani or Mason in '89 he could have redeemed himself much in the way Patterson did post Liston. I suppose with a $13 million dollar payday (1988) and the mindset that even if he continued fighting at HW it would be pointless since Tyson wasn't expected to lose anytime soon. So he called it quits.

It's conceivable he could theoretically upset Usyk, Joshua, Wilder or even win a chess match against Fury.

I think he has a legit chance against any of these top Heavyweights today. I do suspect that if he somehow managed to win a belt today, he'd struggle to hold on to it.

    He isn't beating Fury.

I don't think that he would beat Usky to be honest.

Now if he had come along in the years after Lewis retired, then that might be a different matter.

He wouldn't stand a chance against Fury, I don't know how many will agree with me on this, but I believe he would probably beat Joshua, and Wilder is an intriguing fight the whole way through, and Usyk that would be the technical fight of the century if that makes sense

The odds would be heavily against him. Even more so than in 1985.

on a side note I think he’d dominate this current light heavy division and cruiser as well

I dont think he cuts much of a splash TBH,he was in the right place at the right time.If he had defended against Tucker instead of Cooney I think Tucker would have beaten him.

Before Douglas this was the train of thought for the most dangerous boxers on the planet.

It is often forgotten how much of boxing is just "showing up" they are playing with there health a lot of boxers and trainers know there chances and very few will make it blood and guts when they realize the gulf in a few rounds imagine being a keep busy for Ray Leonard?

He did. He faced an ageing Holmes and got himself the lineal belt. Set himself up for that massive Tyson fight.
He's no chance of beating Fury. Imo, he'd be knocked around the ring eventually.
AJ. Don't see him pulling of an upset there, but maybe winning a few rounds before getting caught.
Saying that, AJ hasn't really impressed of lately.

Tucker would probably have got a decision or even late Ko imo.
Spinks knew that I belive, he took the other way around to Tyson.

He doesnt do well today the size is too much for him...yes I know he beat Cooney a modern sized powerhouse but a retired drunkard and no longer a prime fighter by the time they fought, Spinks has excellent movement and defense but he ain't no Usyk...he wouldn't stand in the pocket and turn the fighter with jabs and circling footwork like Usyk he is a mover.

    Good question.
With boxing politics being the mess it is, he'd possibly pick up a belt. Why not?
I agree the chances of him beating Fury are slim, but boxers let go of titles for any amount of reasons these days.

He could buzz about the division, staying just active enough to remain in the upper ranking echelons, and wait for an ideal opportunity. Most heavies are pretty inactive and the division isn't deep, so it wouldn't be hard to do.

Joshua has had a bad day here and there, Wilder struggled somewhat with limited opposition, and although Fury has looked good against Wilder, he was still in mediocre condition and who knows where his head is at half the time.
No reason to think Spinks on a good day can't beat at least Wilder and Joshua having a bad day. Maybe Fury too.

A match with Usyk would be interesting, though at the moment Usyk would be the favorite I guess.
