Just read this comment. I haven’t come across that reason for shortening football games but there is a valid reason for cutting the time and actually stopping the clock when the ball goes out of play or dead. The proposal is for halves to be reduced to 30 minutes and the stats suggest that there would be no reduction in actual game time, just a strong incentive for teams to stop time wasting. Rangers played Motherwell a few weeks back and incredibly there was 51 minutes of dead time during the game because of Motherwell’s time wasting. So there was only actually 46 minutes (including stoppage time) of actual football.
But wouldn't teams just use some of the 60 mins to timewaste instead of the 90 mins they're currently using?
No because the clock will stop when the ball goes out of play. It’s a fantastic solution. Every league game Rangers play bar Celtic, Hibs and Hearts involves time wasting from the first minute. The goalie will take about 60 seconds to take a goal kick. Corners and throw ins as well. It’s totally depressing and one of the main reasons why the league is so unattractive to neutrals.
Mate it's exactly the same in the Premier league and I'm sure in other leagues. Offputting to see teams just slow the game right down and suck the life out of it.
Boxxer/Sky Sports will be the next stop for fighters that lose on Dazn. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Anthony Fowler reappear on there claiming to be reborn as a fighter. Despite the so called big Dazn budgets, world champions rarely come to Britain to defend their championships and we’ll see what Boxxer are made of if they can bring champions over. Ironically during the days of terrestrial tv only, champions regularly came to Britain to defend against domestic fighters. Even the riches of PPV doesn’t seen to make them come here now.
It’s common sense to stop the clock when the ball goes out of play. Time wasting, diving and feigning injury ruin the game. Stop the clock and just send people off for any kind of simulation. It would stop overnight. Another idea I’ve heard is to ban heading. At first I thought it was a bit ‘health and safety gone mad’, but I think it would actually force teams to pass the ball around. I used to watch lower league English football week in week out, and the ball is in the air for half the game.
Can’t stop heading mate, too important. To be safe and cautious against dementia they need to limit it in training though. A few of the ideas being floated are decent and some are terrible. Arsene Wenger seems to be at the forefront of the group proposing these ideas and he’s a proponent of stopping the clock and shortening halves. One of his ideas I don’t like is kick-ins instead of throw ins. Would just lead to teams in Scotland playing for throw ins and then hoofing it into the box at every opportunity, even in their own halves. Would be a decent suggestion if they restricted the kick and said for example that the kick in needs to be played below head height. There’s always room to improve the game so long as suggestions are sensible and designed to improve the spectacle for fans.
It gets worse now... the event with both Shields and Marshall, not even facing each other but both in a tune up fight, will be on PPV..
Keep the ninety and send off or retrospectively ban proven time wasters. Nothing better than stoppage time madness
Boxing Scene is reporting that Shields-Kozin & Marshall-TBA doubleheader on Dec 11 will be on Sky Sports BOX OFFICE. Now that's a new low.
The clock stopping in line with the ref’s whistle is the biggest change needed in football, imho. Once you’ve watched a team sport with this system, it’s difficult to enjoy football in the same way. Ice hockey is now my favourite team sport because, despite the natural gaps in play, it’s contested fairly and there’s always 60 minutes of action, no matter how long it takes beginning to end. The amount of time footballers waste for set pieces is extraordinary. Imagine if boxing referees didn’t call time out for a fighter losing the gumshield, or for when a cut is being checked by the ringside doctor. This is basically what happens in football, and it needs to change.
I honestly thought you were on the wind up, but here it is. I expected the Marshall-Shields event to be on Box Office, but not this. Suddenly that DAZN sub is looking a lot better value…
