The Simon brown fight was actually his best performance or at least the one I saw. I favored brown to win that match and Buddy just schooled him. Another fun fact about Buddy. He used to go by the nickname Mr. Magoo !!! As for him being an ATG, I went with the “ almost “ option which I like

I used to have that fight memorized. Huge fan of Buddy McGirt.
If you want to understand him, dig into his keep busy fights. Much like James Toney, he had a ton of those, and, again, like Toney, that is where you can watch him work on things and grow.
At one point I had probably 2 dozen such fights on tape, of McGirt.

I agree with you. Mcgirt was a very skilled obviously well schooled fighter, he knew what he was doing in a boxing ring. But he didn’t have that extra gear true ATG's possessed.
He was definitely an almost ATG.

He was awesome but yeah he needed at least one more huge win to make ATG status

One of his best was a loss really; the first Whitaker fight. I had that 6-5-1 for Whitaker at the time. Probably should rematch it.

I have seen pretty much every fight of both men.

One of the craftiest fighters of recent memory.

An old pro I know was high on him and told me that if a normal guy want's to learn to box he is the one to watch.

He was average in every respect and succeeded because he was the better boxer.

I am sure with all the people who frequent this forum there are going to be some who disagree but I have yet to find a boxing fan who didn't appreciate and enjoy Buddy McGirt.

I voted for him as an almost ATG. He beat a lot of good fighters including five alphabet organization world champs. He just never seemed to have that one win that would put him over the top.

    That is so true.
You can learn so much by watching McGirt.

I understand exactly what you mean.
Something that I always look at in a fighter is "can I teach somebody to do what he is doing?"

    That was boxing 101.
If someone who didn't watch boxing ask me what it means to outbox an opponent i would show them two fights
    McGirt/Brown
    Hopkins/Trinidad

    What the hell...Mayweather/Corrales.

He was fantastic in the second Warren fight (and Warren showed he was one seriously hard and brave bas*ard while we're on the subject). Obviously the Brown performance speaks for itself. I think they're his best showings in terms of really looking the part, but honourable mention to his win over Gary Jacobs which was a good watch and fun fight in its own right.

As for where he rates, I can't in all good conscience put him in the ATG bracket - he just doesn't have the wins for that, nor the crunching dominance in either of the two divisions he won titles in (albeit he was legitimately the proper champion at 147 in between beating Brown and losing to Whitaker). Injuries and chaotic management with Al Certo hindered him and he / his team weren't too popular with the powers that be in his pomp. In this day and age it'd be unthinkable that he wouldn't get another title fight at some stage after that second loss to Pea.

But he's a fighter I've always appreciated and enjoyed watching. He's always worth listening to in interviews, as well.
