Why did McCracken set Joshua up to try and box Usyk?

Usyk nearly finished AJ at the end of the fight.

In the 12th yes, from an accumulation of punches and AJ being gassed. Thats when we had one of AJ's corner men doing an impression of a helicopter with a towel.

This. McCracken gave Joshua all the proper instructions such as going to Usyk’s body, to let his punches go, and put the punches together.

Joshua kept hestitating and was choking a lot of his punches. He was also throwing one punch at a time, which was a green light for Usyk to move in and let his hand go.

Can’t blame McCracken if Joshua is afraid to let his hands go

Everytime Joshua connected to Usyk’s body Joshua should’ve been firing off his combinations and he needs to impose himself better in the clinch, since Usyk shouldn’t have been able to turn Joshua as easily and as much as he did.

If Joshua had fought aggressively people would be saying “Usyk is an incredibly skilled boxer who loves when sloppy fighters come straight at him. Joshua has a huge size and reach advantage. Why wouldn’t he just stay outside and box his head off?”

Exactly. AJ trying to KO Usyk bumrush style means that he's going to load up on his punches and give him that extra fraction of a second to slip them and counter him. That is exactly what Usyk did to Joyce in the super series and some of the punches he clipped JJ with were thunderous. Joyce has a steel chin, but does AJ? History suggests not.

I think AJ's strategy was the right one going against Usyk. Set up the jab, try to keep busy and box conservatively and look for the opening. If he could have made the rounds closer there was a healthy chance of a home decision. If Usyk slipped up AJ could have clipped him a good one and maybe turned the tables.

But Usyk didn;t slip up, he was brilliant. He's an outlier at the moment with the way he fights.

Let's put it like this: would you tell a guy to bumrush Ali to try and KO him fast?

Should have taught him feints, AJ`s head never moved after punching, he still had that upright amateur style.

Joshua just couldn't match Usyk's workrate, 1 or 2 jabs, countered by 3 or 4. When he can't use his uppercut, he's essentially useless. He doesn't have Wlad's long range power jab, and Usyk was just too elusive to pin down.

I think they probably felt going into the seventh or eighth (maybe haven't watched it back) that they were just about on track. I think AJ could've got a decision even if he'd really lost by 2 or 3 rounds. It was only that the rounds were no longer close enough to possibly get away with the robbery that put that out of reach and obviously by the end any decision that didnt acknowledge Usyk's superiority would've been more damaging for AJ and Hearn than the defeat itself.

Maybe McCracken has told him that the problem wasnt the strategy and AJ didnt want to hear it hence shopping for a new trainer?
