One durable son of a gun from Canada. Fought most of the bigger light heavyweight names of his era. Summerhays went 39-17-3 (16), only being stopped twice (both relatively late in his career). He went the distance with Michael Spinks, Mike Rossman, Vonzell Johnson, Marvin Johnson, Yaqui Lopez and Mike Quarry. Beat Al Sparks for the Canadian title and knocked out Tony Mundine in Australia as his most notable win. RIP.
I vaguely remembered him having a brother who boxed so I did a quick google search and it turns out he had two: Johnny and Terry. Johnny was a lightweight who was also a Canadian champ. Beat Terrence Alli by split decision in most notable win and also went the distance in losses to Aaron Pryor and Ray Mancini. Terry did not win a Canadian title. Most notable result was being stopped by Wilfred Benitez. Fought mostly at 140. The Summerhays brothers all fought on the same card at Madison Square Garden in 1974. First time and maybe still only time three brothers all fought on the same night in MSG.
Tough guy - he almost beat Mike Rossman before the Ali - Shavers fight. He was coming on strong at the end and nailing Mike with some haymakers which went unanswered for the most part. Rossman had punched himself out by trying to put him away for 9 rounds. I liked him a lot.
