Just finished a docu on You-Tube about Monzon riveting stuff, starts from the early beginning , right up to the fighters demise, insights into his private life/family life etc, all the turmoil that was Carlos, a truly violent man, outside of the ring !
As for the fighter and his standing in the MW ratings it illustrates for me ( not that I needed convincing ) he was a very special fighter, almost impervious to punishment , the right from Valdez was flush ( lest we forget Rocky stopped Briscoe ) yet Monzon was up in 2 seconds, and by then he was 36ish, no mean feat.
I had a little too and throw on here recently with a poster (who I admire ) he felt Monzon was overrated that's his opinion and he is entitled to it, to maybe the younger posters who have not seen much of him, check out this docu and you will see a fighter with insane belief in his own ability's, completely unruffled as to what his opponent is trying to achieve, a cool, calculating, ( one reporter exclaimed " he has Ice in his veins " boxer that just knows he cannot be beat.
On first glance he appears, lazy, one dimensional, even bored, but on closer inspection you know he is just doing what he has to do to stay in front, no need to over exert, all is in hand, but should the challenger get fresh, or beggar belief hit and hurt him ! that was that, Carlos would turn on the burners, and make the mortal pay for his insolence, lots of great fighters fight like that, they know, just know the opponent will fall.
Not flashy, not showy , just great. keep well.

Very similar parallels between Monzon and Valero.

Or perhaps Nicolino Locche who was at the other end of the spectrum being a defensive fighter with 136 fights 4 losses and 14 draws .

Monzon one of the best fighters of all time. And Im not talking about only top 25 either. A legend I fancy in the top 10 with ease.

He is the best middleweight by far, IMO. Not even Ray Robinson could beat him. As far as Marvin goes, had he not lost two fights in Philly or even just one, he may have gotten his opportunity at the champ and received a 15 round beating.
